In the around $300 sweepstakes... Which IYO would be more handy for vocals, KT Pultec clone, or UA710 style pre? Thanks, Chris

My best pre, is the Studio Projects VTB-1. In solid state, it sounds several notches better, than the Onyx pre's, as a comparison. Most noticeable with dynamic microphones. It'd be fine with a SM7, for example. I agree with Michael Joly's past assessment of the VTB-1, as a good entry level pro pre.
Thanks! Chris

Chris I've never tried the 710 pres, but I did really like the Solo 110 and Solo 610 when I had them.

Boy, i am sooo tempted to step into the 500 lunchbox format with these prices. Any feedback on the quality yet? I'm waiting for some feedback on the Midas 500 racks too. But part of me says just pull the trigger and buy now. These KT and Midas prices seem like some sort of market anomaly that could change at any moment. I'm glad I grabbed a KT-LA on Black Friday, and so far I love it. Re stepping into the 500 world, if you can afford it do it! It's not an either/or thing...there are so many benefits to the 500 series that don't happen in plugins or full rack gear. The Radial Tank Driver and EXTC alone make the 500 series worth it to me. Not to mention building CAPI and Hairball stuff. I'm also curious about THESE $142 Midas 500 pres that no one seems to have reviewed yet.

For 225 ish shipped. It's a no brainier to get a 500 rack if you're interested in them. Tons of good 500 series stuff

My domestic orders arrived, the (2) Sennheiser e906 mics arrived earlier this week and the KT-2A came yesterday. Won't get a chance to play with it until after 4 shows this weekend but the build is impressive. My Thomann order is on hold until the 76-KT is back in stock even though the L10 rack is available since I combined shipping. That's okay, I only have the units filling my 4-space Aphex right now anyway but I'm hovering over those $171 Midas EQs... I see the prices have dropped back to $189 for the L10 and KT-76, and $285 for the KT-2A...

The EQ is really good, I've got a pair. Maybe some body at Music Group will realize that if they re built the Midas Venice and Verona in a 500 size without EQ or Pre’s they could sell a ton, a bunch of 500 slot penthouse’s and even more modules. Then they could redesign the thing using a 2520 and transformers Lable it KT and make everybody’s dream console.

The line output transformers are some tiny whacky $2 generic things.
Oddly enough I don't find it to negatively affect the sound quality in any way in my initial usage.

Im already wondering if its possible to swap the output Tranny in the KT2A to something else...just cause haha The EQP-KT and the KT-2A have a little more "high end" looking transformers, with a mu metal cage on the input tranformer for example. Outputs are also more big and chunky. I'm sure you could find a replacement if you did some homework. I fully expect a Revive Audio mod if it hasn't happened arleady. You can just copy what they did, if you can get the deets.

EDIT: I am talking about the EQP-KT in this post Actually I can follow up on that. Revive Audio replaces all the audio path capacitors and those in the low end filter sections. They add an inserstage transfomer (like the vintage ones) but interestingly enough, they don't bother to swap out the stock I/O transformers. Also interesting is they don't change the high frequency inductor, which was part of a big debate about a year ago when these were announced before they shipped. Details are here: www.reviveaudio.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=332

ericn, I think the Music Group/B-word/KT/Midas people are more interested in putting competitors out of business at this point, than actually seeing how much money they can make - that comes next.

I doubt they're going to put UA out of business with their 76 and 2A clones, but they are probably making some of the smaller boutiques makers nervous. The rubber will hit the road if there are longevity issues that require repairs after warranty. However, since their cost is so low, if this happens it would take a few cycles of expenses for people to perhaps stick with the tortoise instead of the rabbit. They have accomplished one thing: people talk way more about price than they do about transformers and other component differences when comparing their product to the more expensive offerings.

They have done a bang up job of putting people out of buisness for over 20 years, and have picked the bones clean of those who didn’t go bye bye. Know I think Uli wants respect I tell you and he can’t buy Aretha though he could try to recover Otis, he’s down deep in the lake behind my old Apartment.

Klark Teknik stuff is all coming with a 10 year warranty now. That’s way better than most (all?) boutique high end brands. They must really believe in their builds.
I haven’t gotten my hands on this stuff yet but all reports are it sounds pretty great. I thought I read somewhere that they kept the KT engineering team on in the UK when they were acquired, and we all know Behringer knows how to scale production up. Seems like a great marriage.

Yeah that depends on the actual treatment of the warranty service team though to customers. I'm sort of wondering how kind and helpful they might be. I have no idea.
