Since I'm going back to songwriting, I'll be using Superior Drummer/Addictive Drums etc. for my drums. So, I am curious about what people are doing groove wise in 2018, or if you're just quantizing to the grid. I'm using Cubase 8, but have Pro Tools 10 as well.
Thanks for any replies/insights/working practices. FJ

Will never sequence drums again for song demos. Logic's auto tempo mapping drum contextual content creation....nothing like it exists outside Logic. Recently, someone asked about "game changing" features in DAWs....that's one for me. It's not a game I play a lot....as I'm not remotely prolific as a writer....but, it means that when I get a song idea--I can have "drums" on that demo without EVER playing it to a click....or sorting through libraries of shitty loops to find one that sucks the least...both of which change the IDEA in it's infancy. IME. This was literally the "day one" demo I'm using to write lyrics to....minus the "green eggs and ham" vocal melody line I muted to share.... soundcloud.com/langsongs/saynothing-dayonedemo

Good to know popman. If I use real drums I'll outsource it to a pro. Looking for groove ideas for VST's. I'll check out the Cubase demo's, but hoping somebody chimes in.

I like Addictive Drums. If you don't feel like playing a beat in it has some good midi loops that have grooves you can easily edit, or just messing with the accent adjustments gets interesting results. Easy to do trackouts so you can treat them like real drums if you choose. Quick and easy for writing and flexible enough if you want to go deeper.

So are you guys saying you play a drum performance on something like PadKontrol- or some other midi drum triggering device- and then, due to Logic's auto mapping, it automatically gives it a groove? A groove based on what?

I have used the Superior Drummer grooves , but not Addictive Drums. I'll check it out. I prefer to stem out all the tracks to the DAW and process them like a real drum performance.

A groove based on what? Based on any track you want it to listen to - a guitar performance, bass track - anything. OR you can have it just do its thing.

When you listen to my clip above...I played nothing having to do with those drums. I tapped nothing. I edited no MIDI notes. I mapped no tempo tracks. Cut and pasted nothing. Looped nothing. That 's what I mean by never sequencing drums for a demo again. Not that I hire someone to have a go at my noodley idea tape.
I played the tune on (probably guitar?)--it maps the tempo and starts to play. I gave the "logic drummer" instructions like defining the sections (Verse 1 chorus 2 etc)...and "half time here"..."follow the bass guitar in this section"..."push time here"..."Fill there--no, less fancy"..."move to the ride in the bridge"...
It solves the problem of needing drums FOR a musical idea. Not the inverse. If you're looking for beats to inspire you to play something, YMMV.
