With the relatively recent arrival of low cost, good quality LDC's ala 3U Audio/ISK/etc., IMHO I think the good 'ol bang for the buck... Oktava 319 is somewhat underrated now. I did an off the cuff, brief acapella with my 319 ($120!) and thought it captured my voice quite well... Chris Song 60oldwaysdie319final.wav (1.56 MB)

A few easy mods can make the MK319 even better. I think it is an incredible bang for the buck option. It doesn't suffer from any of the "zing" issues that so many imported mics have. The basic design is very simple and it has a nice warm sound. Some have said it is "wooly" (whatever that means) but I don't find it to be too dark. It can work wonders on the right singer. it works well on bass and overheads. I've got good results as a room mic too.
For people who don't have much to spend, I think the MK319 is a great mic. I'm not sure there is anything better under $500USD. I've got three of them as well as a handful of much more expensive mics. The MK319 still gets used on a regular basis.

I’ve had several and still have a couple. They are pretty cool mics indeed. Sort of smoky sounding. When I’ve put them next to the 3U stuff, they get outclassed in my view. They just sound a little hard and flat in comparison.
But when you can scoop 319s up for like a hundred bucks (which you can all the time) they’re still a nice find. They’re plagued by inconsistency, which is well known. Making a pair out of the 4 or 5 I’ve had was always a bit of a challenge.
I’m a broken record on 3U mics, but it’s because they’re so high quality for so little coin. But yeah, the Oktavas hold a special place in my heart.
I like the 219 even more. Particularly on bass and drums. Talk about vibe.

Thanks guys. BTW sorry if you tried to listen to my 319 vocal sample. For some reason, I'm not able to upload, like before here. (maybe it's my 'ol computer)
But some prospective good news, is supposedly (within 2019), I'm getting to sing for one of the top Country Music Industry guys. Starting my baby steps as a writer, so that may help.
I'm thinking for certain songs, the slightly more ragged 319 tone, may be favored over my fave U195! I have an excellent, very clear 219 too. Chris

Sounds good. I liked the 219 I had, haven't heard a 319 in person.

I have a pair of MK219's that I've had since around the early 2000's. They do their thing, and I keep coming back to them, mostly for room mics. I've flirted with selling them multiple times over the years, but I always end up using them on stuff and then I never sell them. They don't have a ton of headroom, but they have a neat heavy tone to them and an unhyped top that I just don't get anywhere else.
IIRC the 319 and 219 are very similar in electronics, but the mechanicals are very different.

Yep. My stock 219 sounds close enough to the various modded 219/319's, to where I'm not tempted (right now), to get either one modified. Plus I kind of dig (sorry listening to tons of 60's stuff!) Ye Olde Vintage tone, of the 319.
If I was singing any Delta Blues, the 319 would be Thee Microphone! Chris
