I guess no one mentioned the Cranborne Camden preamp, I'm intrigued by those.
I don't know if there's an RGO thread on those or not.

Hi, all. I need a little help adding some new flavor to my 500 series rack. I'm looking for 2 pairs of modules with mic/line, so I can track and mix through them. I've got the Neve and Api flavors covered, so I'm looking for a color contrast. Right now I have: 6 - Louder than Liftoff Chromas 2 - Rascal Audio Two-V I've been considering TG2-500, Mercury AM16D, Purple Biz, but looking for annecdotes or other options. Any suggestions are welcome! Many thanks, Tommy How are you liking those Two-Vs? I've had an interest in them for a while.

The do the "Neve" thing really well, but they can reach for more territory. They always have a weight to them, though, which I like very much.

I’ve been considering been considering TG2-500, Mercury AM16D, Purple Biz, but looking for annecdotes or other options. Any suggestions are welcome! Many thanks, Tommy I’m biased of course... however, FWIW, the ‘Fine Gain’ control on the TG2-500 acts as like a color wheel, allowing you to tune it for the source/scenario; awesome little processors.

I work a mixed bag of genres: electronic, hip-hop, singer-songwriters - from tracking and mixing, to mastering. Hence wanting the ability to process using the line-in on the mic pre.

Other than the historic references...In a modern context for pop, the TG2 is used for the vocals on all Katy Perry records with Dr. Luke, Maroon 5 (Vocals, guitar, many sources...,) Bruno Mars vocals— the chain is whatever mic ->TG2->1176 for those camps. Guys doing singer-songwriters, Americana, rock etc...Ryan Hewitt, Joe Chiccarelli, Billy Bush and many more. Electronic peeps love pumping synths and other sources through them for processing, it just gives them and organic/analog thing if you will.

Surprised no one mentioned the Avedis MA5. A lot of people go "oh Neve clone" but personally I think it's far from it. One of the best pres ever made IMO. A Hairball Lola could be a nice flavour as well! That is definitely far more than a Neve clone. The clipalator clips show it off well. It's an incredibly polished and finished kind of sound. Almost saccharine to my ears. Neat sound. Course I've never actually used it. I heard it against the DRS which I own, vintech, BAE etc.

A Hairball Lola could be a nice flavour as well! The MA5 is great, but it doesn't have a line-in switch on it. Since the preamps will be in a Cranborne Audio 500ADAT, I need to have the mic/line switch incorporated in the preamp itself to take advantage of some of the ADAT routing.

I got to experience Johnkenn 's once and well, there's still an imprint in my chest from where my jaw hit it Do tell. Well, ok . . . a couple of microphones, including a Royer121 into one of another manufacturers preamps, tracking a guitar and a princeton amp. and it was all kind of 'meh'. So John says, "Let's try the Helios" and it was like electricity was invented. It made the other somewhat renowned preamp sound like a channel on a Mackie from 1995. The Helios just opened up the sound in the places you want it opened up.

I’ve not really been a fan of the Helios pres we have on certain sources, but they ALWAYS shine through on electric guitars for some reason.

I don’t have any 312’s to compare to in that room. We do have a pair of 512’s and I’ve never been a fan of their gain staging with pretty much always having to engage the pad. Never have been able to gel with that. The vp28’s are great sounding but the Helios is sort of a grittier nasty version and always makes it easy to get a badass sound. The only other pre I’ve used that gets close to what the Helios does on electric guitars are some old ADM modules Jason Corsaro used to have (RIP). Bring the fader up on those things and it was THE sound. Close runner up would be Jeff’s Heider pres.

Speaking of gritty and nasty in the same kind of vein, the now-defunct Dizengoff DA2 is absolutely DIVINE on hard rock vocals.
