I'll say this, if I was in the market for a 47FET, I doubt I'd go with a Neumann after hearing this. It sounds just as good, and is way more affordable. On the VO, yea it's crazy close. I still feel like there is a hair of something else going on with the Neumann but damn its close and the H47 capsule is just as good.
I'd love to make a 67 clone sometime with their 67 capsule.
I will wait for kick drum and acoustic guitar though to really hear the comparison. Gotta hear how I feel those lows and something complex like acoustic guitar to really make a judgement.

I posted this clip earlier in the thread..Its a nice but a bit to much fret noise...Not the mics fault IN all fairness, even with the best U47FET, acoustic guitar capture is not really it's strong suit. Leave that to the KM84 . . . and your forthcoming clone of the original!!

Leave that to the KM84 . . . and your forthcoming clone of the original!! I suppose I'd agree, based on that clip. What is the U47FET's strong suit? I've never really used one...I'd assume drums and bass...would like to hear from people who know

Plus deep baritone voices (like Lou Rawls) and basses. Also bright voiced singers (like me!), to minimize sibilance.I think of it as a tad mellower, than a vintage U87i. Chris

If it shines on electric bass amps, then the H47 is well worth it.

I mean, at that price vs the reissue, its still worth it to me even it doesn't nail it totally because I bet it sounds great. I just want to hear what it sounds like against an original so I can get a feel for it.

We're going into the studio on Tuesday and planning on tracking drums, bass, and heavy electric guitar, side by side with the Neumann.

It would be smart to compare the newer Neumann reissue. Since that's new, it wouldn't have had 50 years of time to age and affect the sound.

If they've been trying to nail an original then it would probably be best to use an original. But both would actually be nice. I won't complain about free clips though.

I doubt we can get ahold of a new one in time for the recording, and we have in fact been working to emulate the vintage mic as they tend to be more revered than the reissues. The vintage mic that we're using is a nice example with the original capsule, in very good condition. I'll post some pictures and/or video with the clips...

I agree with you guys, a comparison to a vintage model is of course a first priority, but in fairness, comparing to the reissue would give a great idea of just how good the new Heiserman is when compared to a new Neumann, even if it doesn't outgun the original.
I'm curious what the consensus is regarding how close the new Neumann is to the original.

Hopefully we can get ahold of the reissue -- we tried renting, but they required some crazy insurance that we don't have.... Here in NC, I know the owners of virtually every major studio, and no one has one to borrow. If we have to we'll just buy one on Reverb and resell it when we're done, but that'll be down the road a bit. If anyone has access to one and would be willing to let us borrow it, please let us know!

Yes you have to have a policy that will cover the mic if it is damaged or destroyed. I don't know anyone with a reissue, not that I know many people.

I'm in NC too. By any chance could you name some of the "major studios?" I would like to do some research on that. All I really know is who's in Asheville. Of course when I say 'major' studio, that means something different than in LA or NY. But the ones I know.... Overdub Lane (Wes Lachot's studio), Manifold Recording, Dark Pines Studio, Nightsound Studio, Bunkersound, Fidelitorium (Mitch Easter's studio). Of all of these, Manifold is the cream of the crop in terms of the space and equipment; they can probably hold their own with any nearly any studio in the world. And of course, EMRR is in NC as well, but I'm sure he wouldn't have a reissue fet47. These are all what I would consider 'professional studios' with an abundance of nice gear, consoles, etc. I'm sure I'm leaving a bunch out... including a ton of smaller spaces doing great work like Jaime King's Basement Recording (Between the Buried and Me). Oh and I forgot about Echo Mountain in Asheville; their website lists a pair of 47Fet's, so maybe I'll check with them -- don't know if they're vintage or reissues. You're probably also familiar with Sound Temple in Asheville, but they don't have one...

I tried the Reissue (and loved it!). I bet it's essentially the same sound as the vintage Neumann. Less pesky variables, compared to a U47 tube mic design. Chris

Soundpure has a decent space and some nice equipment, too.
Fidelitorium is a neat looking place.

Chris I have two of the reissues, #52 and #57. They are matched and sound identical to the originals. Yes, I know that for a fact. I wish they hadn't turned the cardioid symbol 180 degrees but there it is. Anyhow, 2 isn't really enough, so my interest is very genuine!
