The Axe FX 3 looks very interesting. I've owned the AXE Standard and the AXE FX Ultra and they had excellent effects and high gain sounds but I could never get the sound of a clean amp on the edge of breakup that I liked with the AXE, but that could have been my lack of knowledge with tweaking the AXE since there is a lot of tweaking that can be done.

That was the main reason I went with the Kemper.

I can’t swing any of it...just no way to justify the return on investment these days. I hear you there, clients are all moving away, must be something I said.

I mean, if you're a guy mixing 3 songs a day at $200 apiece, then hey - go buy that $7000 mic and $6000 Trinnov and well...the list goes on. And then I would ask if you're a mix guy, why do you need a $7000 mic? LOL. I have to admit, the majority of what I've bought in the past had ZERO to do with the money I was making.

Heh heh. I had 3 very loyal clients but in the last 90 days they all moved out of the area! Seriously they were all easy to work with, understood what I brought to the table, but better jobs for them or significant others made them all move, throw BeadD moving to Nashville and my cabinet guy Brian Dying: a couple of other friends moving I’m starting to get paranoid!

So I bought yet ANOTHER Kemper. That makes, what? 5? Lol. Anyway, my thoughts after tracking dozens of songs with some of the newer UAD plugs is that they’re absolutely just as good. As askomiko said, all the Kemper stuff starts sounding similar to me. Maybe that’s because there are only really five or so amp designs and everything really just stems from the 5E3 designs maybe I have never really noticed it that much because I never had a bunch of physical amps at the same time. There’s no doubt the Kemper sounds great. I actually bought the Milkman profiles from Tone Junkies and they sound fantastic. I just found that I could be super satisfied with the UAD DS40 or Buxom Betty - guess I’m saying I didn’t hear the Kemper as bringing any better quality. I had to know first hand. Now I know. Hopefully I can sell it lol.

Big Kemper fan!
I had like 8 tube amps at one time but after i bought a kemper they've been collecting dust.. The kemper is really awesome but very profile dependent ofc and i get the feeling that people who hasn't been liking it just never used properly good profiles. 99.9% of the profiles out there fail, having bad cab simulations and therefore the profile itself sounding bad. I got one really great cab from a world known producer and with that most heads sound awesome.
It's just a fail safe, knowing that each and every day you'll get the same sound powering up the kemper. Because who hasn't been in a session coming in the next day and the amp sounding completely different huh!? Absolut nightmare. Convinience, effeciency and speed is what comes to mind thinking of the kemper. Just plug n play getting into the what Matters, the music. Cheers

In reality I primarily only use about four different Kemper profiles, the Britt Dirty Shirley (my current favorite), a Fishman Acoustic, a Blackface Fender, and a Marshall. Since I use the Kemper for live work as well as recording the Kemper is a really great tool for me. It's nice being able to switch from an acoustic guitar profile to an electric guitar profile for live work. This has probably been discussed before, but it would be nice to be able to use the lower end 2 channel UAD interface and connect it to my Symphony system via digital just to be able to use the UAD amp sims.

I always found myself only using a few profiles too which was one justification I used for selling it a couple times. But there was never an equal alternative until I got this Apollo x. Again - maybe I just didn’t dive in enough with the blackface Apollo, but i remember really not being satisfied with some of the same amps I love now.

The dirty Shirley is the DS 40, right? There’s a nice direct comparison.

I think Black Lion offers an upgrade where they do that.

A large part of the Kemper appeal for me is profiling my gear. I can then have at my fingertips the sounds I captured. My guitars, my amps, my mics, my signal chain, my room sounds. The results are to me quite usable. The downside to that success is that once the library of sounds is built up I do start to think about selling the old amps. I love those amps - so they are hard to part with. I also like the simplicity of turning it on and having the sounds there; without having to fire up a DAW and open a amp sim. I like the dedicated hardware box for this purpose; not to mention I like using it for just fun playing. I've got the powered version of the Kemper and I keep it connected to a speaker so it is ready to roll at all times.
The price is steep for sure so I do understand the tradeoff if you are able to get similar/better/whatever sounds with other gear.
I've been messing with bass guitar and the Kemper. I long ago sold my bass amps, so I'm currently only using profiles from others. That is adding to the Kemper appeal/fun for me; having it for guitar and bass. I do also like sending a vocal or other signals into the Kemper to mash it up and give me some dirt.

longscale In a similar vein, I was hoping that Kemper might use the technology to produce a similar gadget that sampled channel strips/pre amps/compressors/EQs. But, on reflection, wasn’t that what the Focusrite Liquid Channel claimed to do...

OK - I really am schizophrenic. I've tracked two songs the last two days with the Kemper...and it's just sooooo easy. And ultimately, the profiles DO sound different. Like I said above, I'm guilty of tweaking everything to sound like a 67 Deluxe lol. And then I go on a message board and complain about everything sounding the same. I'm starting to really figure out the nuances of electric guitar in production - i.e., it's how the amps fit into the entire mix...not just "I'm going to tweak this until it sounds killer by itself." Annnnyway. I can't sell it. The UAD stuff DOES sound fantastic. But the more I thought about putting more money into the UAD amps, the more I thought about never being able to get my money back. At least with this, I have a piece of HW that (currently) has some value. So, I'm about-facing.

I just demoed the freebie Britt Dirty Shirley. That might be my new favorite profile. While Im playing it I was thinking “no way UA plugins sound like this, lol” hey maybe they do nowadays. The last plugin I tried before Kemper was the Helix.. I’m really happy with the Kemper.
