MJB -
Seems like all of the struggles for a vocal mic paid off - lovely texture and tone. The guitar work on this is sublime. Really tasty fills and lap steel work. And, because of course I'm going to fixate on insane details, the snare tone is a perfect choice.
I hope you feel great about this. Not only is at a testimony of the power of art and the need to create, but also of the value of friendship and community. I feel like I really needed this.

Hey sirthought, thanks so much for your suggestion. I'll hopefully get some help marketing, but for now, I'm on my own, so every reference is important.
Thanks mrholmes. On "Give Your Love", that's Mark Rabuck (M57) on piano and all the BV's. He's amazing. That track will be my first video.
MJH, thanks so much for listening, and for your thoughtful post.

Martin, Thanks for the shout-out. What a pleasure and an honor it has been to be able to contribute to your music.
For the record (pun intended), just as Martin went through gear chains as things progressed, so did I. From Warbler (I think I probably used it on some tracks) through a few different iterations of the Blackspade UM17, and working with folks at Blackspade ending with my current UM4X for vocals. For preamps - starting "at" the box to Dizengoff D4s to TB12, P1s and NP-500NV, and similar upgrades with other outboard gear, etc. Almost all of my decisions were heavily influenced by knowledge gained from this site, so really this is also a thank you to all of you RGOers.
I'm still looking to upgrade my piano mics, and I'm saving pennies to do so, but I'm feeling pretty good about what I've been able to do with the gear I have at this point.

Everything you did sounded good. More because you're playing and singing are great, less the gear you did it with.

Even since the last tracks I played for you, I've upgraded my box to a MOTU 828ES. Pretty soon I'll have no excuses for not sending good tracks.

As many of us are aware, it is a significant effort to complete a project like that, and you have my sincerest congrats, Martin!

It was definitely a trial by fire Bruce. When I started, I'd never used a DAW myself, so it was a steep learning curve to put it lightly. So many of the guys here got me through some sticky moments. It took me way longer than it should have to wrap my head around digital zero being a brick wall, so a few tracks are kinda crunchy

Hey, I forgot to mention that our very own Hakan Hansson at drumrec.com played drums and percussion on "Give Your Love", and it was outstanding. Just edited my post to mention him. That was a difficult track and I'd tried a few different drum solutions, but Hakan helped it become what it should have been all along.

Thanks jtc111 ! Thanks maq3396. The CD Baby tracks were WAV files, just dithered to 44.1, so they're pretty good quality. They pay 93%, so t's a fair deal with them. I'll PM info to you if you'd rather have a CD. store.cdbaby.com/cd/martinjohnbutler12

Really, Americana is completely not my cup of tea ... But i have to agree with all the voices here: Congratulations, Martin J.! It sounds really good. All the long time it took to finish, all the perfectionistic fine tuning, it all paid out in the end, if something like this album is the outcome. (And on a sidenote: Track 5 really has some kind of magic, that fits the song perfectly. I am pretty sure M57's piano added to this magic, he really is an emotionally touching piano player...) I love how everything came together, with all those talented musicians from here that had a part in this project. Even if this is not my type of music (or maybe because it isn't and I hear it from a more naive approach to the style?) I have the instant impression of a well done commercial project that has really some heart in it. Hope you get what I try to express. I guess you are very proud of it now. You should be. Best regards.

And I just recognized that I hear thru the album a second time right now and already have some songs sticking in the ear. :-D I guess that is exactly how it should be.

Finally found some time to listen to the whole album. Sitting on the train into Manhattan to make my Carnegie Hall debut. Naturally the last thing I feel like listening to is opera, since I’m going to spend 2 plus hours listening to it and singing it tonight.
It sounds so nice. It’s well balanced. The vocals pop, but aren’t over powering. The guitars really drive the grove of the songs. Well done my friend and to all who worked on it.

Thanks so much for listening Vincent. The connections we've made here over the years have made so many days better for it. I so appreciate everyone's comments and thoughts.

Just got your CD, and was able to listen up to Track 6. So far, so excellent! I'd been listening to a lot of J.D. Souther and Don Henley solo stuff lately, and these songs/performances reminded me of them. Also Warren Zevon too!
Again MJB, you really have a fine voice, with tons of character, same goes for the other singers on BGV's.
I'm looking forward to more tomorrow, I started work at 5AM. Chris

Finished listening to the CD. First rate! Congrats MJB, very impressive. If you don't mind my opinion... From a purely commercial standpoint, the first and last tracks on it, have the most "hit potential". All of them were very, VERY good though! Chris

You know Martin at times we all want to strangle you for your constant endorsement of the Blackspade and Soyuz, then you take a listen to this and you realize they just fit you perfectly! On the way 2.5 hour trip back from the Lindsey Buckingham show last weekend I put on the most recently add to my ITunes so it was Richard Thompson’s Acustic Classics ( my RT addiction is because of friend MF ) and then your album, suddenly wife Says “ you know we have something like 10 versions of Persuasion between RT and Tim Finn and I keep thinking I want to hear this guy do it”. I can’t say she’s wrong.

Great work, Martin. I need to listen to it some more. Rarely do I listen to anything outside of what I'm doing in Pro Tools. Just try to maximize my time experimenting on this audio engineering stuff. Seems like I'm getting to a point where I may be able to put down the PT and listen for fun more often, so I'll definitely spend some time with your songs.

Thanks so much for listening guys, it's really fun to hear from you all.
Eric, that's so cool to hear of your wife's comment!
I agree with you Chris about hit potential, but I'd add the next to last song, "Something's Coming" to that list. I know some bikers who love the last track, Goin' Down Last, hopefully they don't go down on their bikes though ;-)
