Hmm cool, are we 100% sure someone didn't just slap a red badge on it though? Anyway, seems likely that they changed with the 170R version.. Not that they like to make things any less confusing.

I don't know about the "i" or anything like that, but I have some 1984 (first year) TLM 170s, sequential. They kill. Yea, if your source isn't happening, these will sound like as much, but they are great mics for giving you what you put in, in the best way. I was working on a project I did in another studio where I used them as overs on a drum kit. The guy is rich with tons of old vintage drums and cymbals, and these cymbals just sound so great through these mics. Even through the plain Jane Digi console pres.
1000 is great. I would snap that up.

I’ve always dug this performance, and the vocals sound pristine through that 170.

Thanks spindrift !!!!! Your suggest that I look at the mic again just saved me a couple thousand bucks and endless tears..... I looked at the mic earlier, didn't see an "i" and put it away. I just went back to the machine room / mic closet only to find about a QUART of water all over my mics. AAAAAHHhHHHHHHHHHHH!!! I quickly dried everything, and called my HVAC guy late on a friday nite. I'm in the middle of a TV show and can't NOT have my HVAC in the machine room working, and something has made the Fujitsu mini-split HVAC puke out a ton of water. First time that's ever happened!! Something went crazy in the system, so thanks - I wouldn't have checked in there without your question till tomorrow, and that could have been too late..... I owe you a cold one!!! (Not water though.... ) So...on point....I looked again, and low and behold, AWAY from the "170" is a lone, tiny, "i" out by itself in a slightly different color (light and almost undetectable) hidden right behind / underneath the yoke. Go figure. I've owned it for years and never seen it. Mine has a red badge, an "i" under the yoke, and the "R" on the pattern selector switch next to fig8 inside a cardiod type pattern graphic - not the version with the "R" out by itself. So I'm guessing I have a FET80 Amp? Either way, doesn't matter to me, it sounds very nice. Thanks for the serendipitous mic check, and for the fascinating history!! Cheers, bp Ouch Bill, this is why all mics here live in waterproof Seahorse cases, but hey at least it’s not a hurricane!

I just went back to the machine room / mic closet only to find about a QUART of water ... Cheers, bp Hey, this just happened to me an hour ago!!! My Mitsubishi started spilling water out into the studio (lucky I was there when it started). Called my AC guy & he said to vacuum the outside water drain. Went outside & found it all clogged up & inserted one of those spiked plumbing strips & massive slimy gook started coming out. All fine now

Checked the outside drain. All appears to be clear. My HVAC guy seems to take the weekends off..... Will hope to hear from him by Mon morning....

Thanks for all the great info and banter. My wife actually gave me the go ahead to pull the trigger, but I'm not going to jump at it though as I am not actively recording others and am pretty happy with the mics right now at my disposal. Lalah Hathaway is an awesome singer and I could really hear that clear and gorgeous quality of the 170. For me I do not think that it would be a good fit as I to some degree enjoy hiding a bit behind a more colorful curtain...I don't think that I would feel very comfortable standing there stark naked and out in the open. The mic still seems to be available, so anybody that wishes to take a gander... www.tutti.ch/de/vi/zuerich/musik/instrumente/neumann-tlm-170i-vorgaenger-mikrofon-des-tlm-170-r/23552262

I'm not even sure what a 170 "i" IS. All I've seen are 170's and 170R's. Maybe its a Euro thing? For sure the "R" stands for "remote" - and the polar pattern can be controlled remotely via the remote power supply - N48R2 I believe. Mine is a plain 170 - no i or R, but with a Red badge. Awesome mic. I wouldn't hesitate a second on an R for that price. Also, I believe the R's all have a red band around the mic vs. black. Oh, and yes, buy that KM84 too. In Neumann-speak "i" generally designates an XLR output connector, as opposed to a DIN/Teuchel connector.

Huh. Just checked mine. There is indeed an "i" in the middle of nowhere there. Can almost not see it.

Well, I caved. Unfortunately my voice is a little shot from a wicked case of bronchitis. I can croon, but I really want to lay into an aria and hear this baby next to my FleA 49 and either my TLM67 or U87ai. Hopefully in a few days. http://instagr.am/p/BtHuniSlP9j

Give us just a little taste it might prove even more revealing.

So does the purple badge indicate a transformer version of the mic? Or was it just mis-badged in the early production?

Can't wait to hear it as well as your thoughts! Basically it’s clean in much the same way my U87ai is without being bright and it’s neutral like my TLM67 without being colored. You immediately get the picture you can record anything with it. I was using it with my Dan Alexander a bit and the SSL Alpha Channel with VHD set in the middle. Through the SSL it’s very clean. The DA sounded beefier. I actually want to hear it through my Demeter VTMP later, as that’s my go to for FET mics, particularly my U87ai. It also rounds out the TLM67 into a more U67 sound. Give me a few more days with it and then I’ll post something.

I can only record one at a time.

So does the purple badge indicate a transformer version of the mic? Or was it just mis-badged in the early production? All TLM 170s are transformerless. Very neutral mic, a great choice when you're not looking to add color and want a natural sound.

I’m sorry guys. I’m still under the weather and even though I tried to record a small snippet of this for you it just didn’t come out the way I wanted it to. My voice is back a little better today, so maybe I’ll try again later or at latest tomorrow. Are you guys interested in hearing something scientific with each mic through a clean preamp so you can hear the sound of the mic or would you like to hear the mic in the context to which I would use it, with a preamp I feel compliments it? I am ever a fan of FET and TLM mics through tube preamps and tube mics through transformer pres.

Ok, I decided to do this in a non scientific way with the TLM170 & U87ai through my Demeter VTMP and my FleA49 through my Dan Alexander Neve 1272. There are some gain staging issues I have to apologize for, particularly with the U87ai. I didn’t realize it till afterward since I was monitoring my TLM170. There are a couple of places the TLM170 and FleA49 distort a bit too, but it’s worse on the U87 and just didn’t have time to re-record it. Some of it may actually be a little bit of vocal fry, since my voice is still a little tired from being sick. That said I still think you can hear the differences. I cut a raw file and a quick mix with each, all of them going into the UAD Neve 88R for a high pass and a few small EQ moves, then into the UAD LA2, nothing crazy and pretty standard for how I mix. www.dropbox.com/sh/uglfrsih0ylv94q/AABO-r_lTgJ6tBiWQBhrIY4Ya?dl=0
