I love my V13s. I bet this is killer, too! ...if only I needed more mics... Sorry. I don’t understand.....

]Abbey Road string section mic? Got a picture of it hanging over the orchestra? I heard about it 2nd-hand (our excellent distributor, Emerging UK, was the one that told us about it)...but according to Paul, Arne said that the V44S made mixing the strings "much easier" in the way it captured the highs. They hung it under the Decca tree of like, $50k worth of M50s (drooooool)

The V13 is already an amazing microphone, regardless of how cheap it is. The V1 set is also super enticing, so the V4 Is probably phenomenal. Vanguard really deserves to take off for their price-to-quality ratio. aw shucks, I'm blushing.

So - did anyone try the stereo version? I love my Avantone CK40. If this was "the same but better" I'd buy it in a heartbeat. Also intrigued by the rest of the line. Significantly different in that the capsules are far, far superior (IMO). That's the beating heart of any microphone. Also supremely different in the electronics. Improved power section as well. Sizing is different, too...among other things. I don't want to give away all the secret sauce. I actually ditched the pad/rolloff, as the headroom is absolutely bonkers (I had one of our clients stick our V4 INSIDE the kick drum, and it sounded awesome). I didn't see the need (or room) for another switch in the microphone...I actually had to get pretty creative with the PCB layout to make what we wanted to do fit. I'd say sign up for the demo program if you're in the US, but we literally just ran out of parts for the V44S. They're rather popular. I've got more coming!

Am guessing if the V13 is C12-ish... The V4 is 414-ish, as in brass capsule-ish? Chris

A month in and I'm really loving my v44s. Been having fun with a simple drum setup of v44s OH's, 84 snare and D12 kick. Nice on upright piano as well. I even used it as the only mic to record a full band rehearsal, seems to be able to handle everything I've thrown at it so far without fuss. I think by the second day I just left the breakout box normaled into the Silver Bullet's pres as they're quite the pair.

Yes, the v44s is better than the Avantone and is staying with us! The CK40 sounded muffled in comparison, and has a significantly narrower stereo image. It’s still a good mic and it has served me well, but I’m all for improving the capture as much as I can! By the way, even though the 44s is brighter, it never gets harsh. This is all on overheads, haven’t tested any other application.

Liked it better than N, and also better than my DAV.

I tend to leave it cascaded A>N both driving a bit but for my use the v44s doesn't seem to be too picky. Even had nice OH results doing a live video recording where it went into a Sound Devices recorder. I'll have to try only hitting the SB's A next time. I'm just now starting to play with the patterns and/or setting it more narrow after sticking to cardioid and 90 degrees for these first 2 months, so many versatile options.

Just got ours in, so I will have a better understanding of this tool by the end of the week. Keep in mind this mic is THREE patterns!
All things point towards you getting a suitable microphone for a great price. How does the V4 do on vocals? I was close to pulling the trigger on a couple, but they seemed a bit bright/sibilant... Were the samples just throwing me?

Were the samples just throwing me? Got a link to the samples? Not hearing harshness in this mic. its certainly brighter, but I don't find it harsh. With all microphones, its only as good as the performance from the user.

The V44s is definitely not harsh on overheads. Very detailed, sweet high end.

That explains why it LOOKS like an avantone. Yeah, I'm kind of out of the mic market these days. I got a huge batch of vintage well kept original classics a couple of years ago, and it cost me dearly, but was well worth it. I kind of quit looking at mics then for self preservation and marital happiness. LOL Still....I'm always ready at the drop of a hat to be lured back in. Will keep my eyes open for some real world reviews on these.... Thanks for the tip!! <snip>Anyway, Derek seems like a really great guy to deal with. He seems to be putting in a lot of care to his mics.<snip>.
Just spoke with Derek today as he called to let me know they got parts in and my V44 would be shipping today. Seems like a really great guy. Look forward to checking them out. Thanks to all for pointing the way....

Derek and co. at Vanguard make truly GREAT products! Don't sleep on these. Definitely check them out if you haven't already.... ;-)
The price vs sonics ratio is insane. Truly awesome sounding and performing microphones. Gotta love the shockmount(s) as well!
Our 2 pence...

I can officially attest to the build quality and sound of these mics. Used a new pair on a session. Drum overheads into a Langevin DVC. Excellent. Tried it on female vocals with the Langevin and a Lindell 18xs. Also excellent. Acoustic guitar into DVC and Lindell 18xs. Also excellent. As an aside, the Langevin is getting used a lot since I picked it up. Great workhorse.

I love my V4. Been using it alot on kick drum and as a second vocal mic for when the tube thing isn't working. The problem is I'm getting tired of moving them around and now I want a second one.

The videos they played at their NAMM booth, were very impressive, of the various "V's".
My friend Don and I really dug their stereo microphone too. Chris

Just get a second for the pair. I use them all the time. Awesome mics. I legitimately returned a $1000 custom made boutique hand wired blah blah mic, because it wasn't better for my purposes than the V4.

I got the chance to test V4, V44S, V13. Love what i heard. So I bought two of each (except the V44S which is stereo). Will test them more thoroughly in the spring when the live studio will be ready. Very affordable microphones and recommend to try them. The risk that you like them is imminent KR Håkan
