Definitely looking forward to trying this mic, after such a great experience with the V-13. I really like using transformer-less mics on certain sources that are super warm sounding already.
V4 Multi-Pattern FET Condenser. The V4 is a highly-requested "mono" version of our popular V44S stereo microphone (one of which resides at Abbey Road Studios as a key part of their string section mic locker). It features 3 selectable polar patterns, and the useful addition of a -10dB pad/100Hz roll off on the rear. Our custom-voiced edge-terminated 3-micron 34mm capsule runs into a transformerless solid-state circuit with an ultra-high-grade JFET and cryogenically-treated, top-shelf componentry.
The V4 has all of our usual trimmings - the signature Vanguard "classic car" aesthetic, our VLSM heavy-duty shock mount, a flight case & wooden storage box. And once again, every single microphone undergoes final assembly and 100% testing here at our shop in California. At $399, we are confident we can beat out any microphone in this price range and several steps beyond.

Abbey Road string section mic? Got a picture of it hanging over the orchestra?

Abbey Road string section mic? Got a picture of it hanging over the orchestra? I don’t have one, but you can see in the users section, Derek has a connection with, Arne Akselberg - Abbey Road (Sir Paul McCartney, Ian Bostridge, the Belcea Quartet...) 3-time Grammy-winner Arne Akselberg is the Senior Engineer for Abbey Road Studios. His extensive credits include the likes of Sir Paul McCartney, Leif Ove Andsnes, Ian Bostridge, the Belcea Quartet, Maxim Vengerov, Yuri Temirkanov, James Galway, Sabine Meyer, Sir Charles Mackerras, Mariss Jansons, David Daniels and Itzhak Perlman. Anyway, I just copied the press release, so I don’t have any photographs to back it up, but I be willing to “take his word for it” based on an assumption that this above engineer likes Derek’s mics enough to use them on a session.

Cool. If legit and not "over exaggerated" or used one time or something like that, it's quite impressive for a line I've never even heard of before. Can you give a little history of the company Adam? Thx. <thumbsup>

But I’m a fan of his products so far. I’m surprised you haven’t heard of them.

I got a huge batch of vintage well kept original classics a couple of years ago, and it cost me dearly, but was well worth it. I kind of quit looking at mics then for self preservation and marital happiness. LOL Still....I'm always ready at the drop of a hat to be lured back in. Will keep my eyes open for some real world reviews on these.... Thanks for the tip!!

Will keep my eyes open for some real world reviews on these.... Thanks for the tip!! Marital Happiness is very important. In both human relationships and gear relationships. hehe. Anyway, Derek seems like a really great guy to deal with. He seems to be putting in a lot of care to his mics. When I hooked up his V-13, I was VERY impressed. For the price, and quality, [aesthetics and sound quality] it seemed like a no brainer. There are some heavy hitters using his mics. At least, since I have been paying attention to his company. Anyway, the V-13, has a very nice sound. I find it along the lines of a C12. Not so much 251'ish, but very C12'ish. It has a sweeter tone. Bright, but sweet and not harsh. The Mic has some vibe/roundness at the peaks to it and didn't hurt my ears on a louder singer. Which made me like it instantly. Ever since I sold my UM25c I have been thinking about loading my locker with a similar c12/251ish vibe. But I didn't want to spend another $2900. I would much prefer to spend less. Because I do not want to be murdered by my girlfriend over a brightly clear microphone.

Now you're teasing..... The one thing on my list would be proper C12's. I like what I'm using on OH's (Gefell's), but C12's still haunt my memories. Oh yeah, and a pair of well kept 49's which I'll probably never be able to afford. Seems like some have wandered close to C12 territory, but nothing touches 49's, so I'll have to keep my ears open for some C12/V13 comparisons on OH's......

Hopefully not to derail the thread (he said as he derailed the thread), but speaking of the V44, anyone have experiences with it? Looks rather tempting.
TIA, -09

The V13 is already an amazing microphone, regardless of how cheap it is. The V1 set is also super enticing, so the V4 Is probably phenomenal. Vanguard really deserves to take off for their price-to-quality ratio.

Curious how this holds to a FET 47. I want some iteration of a 47 for kick out and strings. But I don't wanna spend FET 47 prices. Can you help me, Batman?

All things point towards you getting a suitable microphone for a great price.

If the vanguard V4 doesn't work out (and it probably should), I did finally get to try the Kel HM7-u on kick out, and it rocks. Pretty thunderous low end, super cheap, and also surprisingly light weight. Also lights up once you send phantom power to it, so that's pretty to look at.

We are finding out that the V4 is super versatile! It is hitting the nail pretty close to home on the V13! Had a client stick it on the outside of the kick drum. He bought it immediately after that. He was looking for a FET47 style, but the V4 covered that application with ease.

So - did anyone try the stereo version? I love my Avantone CK40. If this was "the same but better" I'd buy it in a heartbeat. Also intrigued by the rest of the line.

I’m getting a demo of the three LDC in a few weeks from their Spanish dealer.

I finally grabbed the v44s. Only arrived today but so far the tests on acoustic guitar and drums sound pretty damn good. No signs of harshness, just good solid sound and going into a Silver Bullet the image in cardioid at 90 degrees is awesome. Have yet to try any other patterns or spread so I'll know more as I put it through the paces but so far I'm really digging it.
