The only reason I got out of the Apollo was the conversion. If it had amazing conversion I would be really tempted. Unless there are some really cool features on the x16 which simply have just not already been mentioned yet, I'm likely to sell my SF 16 sometime in the next year for whatever I can get and just pick up a used SF Quad to use in conjunction with a Motu 16a, which I would also need to purchase. At that point, the SF Quad would be used just for realtime monitoring during tracking and as a glorified Quad Satellite at mixdown. I think this new Apollo release has probably become the final nail in the coffin of me using an Apollo as my primary interface. The Motu offers so much more, the conversion is great and the price is right. I'm sure the conversion on the new Apollos is better but, man, the lack of some features compared to other interfaces out there just gets harder and harder to ignore.

Drew @ UA have you guys relaxed your resale license transfer limit? I ran into an issue where you guys had said I had transferred “too many” licenses. I might be interested in selling my satellite to buy one of these, but I wouldn’t want to run into this issue with another buyer again. I still do t understand why you guys don’t just set up the ability to transfer licenses Freon your user account. I’ve probably owned 4 Apollo’s, 2 or 3 Satellites and I know I’m missing other stuff...not sure why me selling at a loss and buying new is a problem.

Well, Slate is biting at the heels of UAD now. They've come up with their own interface now with the main selling point being conversion. It looks like there no DSP for running their plugs, as they'll let your computer do it.
Take a look:

I, for one, have been far more interested in better converters opposed to more power. How do people that run a quad and say - a quad satellite - run out of processing. I routinely mix 30-50 track mixes with native and UAD using just a quad satellite and I very rarely run out of processing power. Add the ability to freeze tracks and I don’t really get the obsession. But maybe I’m missing something. That's very interesting to hear. I mean, it all depends on your mixing style, I suppose. The reason I run out with a quad and octo on board is that I like to do plenty of productions with a virtual SSL. I mean, if you have a 1:1 replica of an SSL 4k, it makes sense to me to use it as a console. The same with the Studer A800. That is, when I want "that sound"
Some mixes I do the "modern" thing which is to pick and choose. I don't always blanket the mix in a virtual-analog way.
But, I want to be able to. And at 96k if I want. If I am running 20-30 tracks of A800 and SSL 4k or Neve 88rs etc, plus some 1176s LA2as and other things thrown in there, it really really starts to eat things up, even with load lock disabled. However if we are talking just using some fairchilds, comps and odd eqs here and there, I have plenty on tap.

I guess we understand it differently. I had been a UA client for roughly 5-7 years and during that time the savings have increased and the discounts have deepened. The coupons mostly are window dressing and I think just a silly incentive from UA, the real savings are in its seasonal sales, registration deal, the combo 3,6 and 10 deals ( these are like 66% off who cares about a $25 coupon ?) and the recent sale in which ua cross-referenced with people's bought plug ins with the Ultimate prices and offered a discount price for the remaining plug ins. I understand that not many buy the ultimate package but there are many people who track their purchases at UA forum who report average prices well below $100 and some below $50 per plug in. It's very easy to save money with UA, first be patient and wait for a better deal, second, do the math and when UA offers a good combo price jump on it and third, be creative, for example, you can buy somebody else's used plugs in, move any duplicates to a second system and sell those. Personally, I sold all my UA stuff but if I ever got back in, I would likely just buy one of the 10 plug registration deals and just live with those. I will concede that I could have saved more money than I already have. But with the waiting for the right sales and things to happen for a plugin, and maybe having to buy other plugins in a bundle that I don't really want or need to use, the planets really have to align to get those kinds of savings. Some of these things go on sale once a year. These products are digital domain in nature, which means they start their path to obsolescence upon the day it is released. It's only a matter of time until the next "most closest closest closest ever analog modeled ________ plugin" is released. Call me impatient, but if I have a need for something, I want to put it to good use in what I would describe as a "reasonable amount of time".
I don't need every plugin in the ultimate package. In fact, there is a ton of fluff in there. That is a waste of money. I can only register UA so many times. The average customer is one of continuance and not single time purchasing. Even if you buy the ultimate today, they release new plugins all the time. So you would need to buy those as time goes on anyway, correct?
Now, this is all very relative to the fact that UAD has competitors in the plugin market. This fact and it's effects as well as it's considerations is inseparable from the idea of their sales and value versus other companies. I can compare plugins like the recent API 2500 I bought from Waves for less than $60 dollars with the UAD version. If they are comparable in their utility, which many other plugins from other companies are, I can make a call based on perceived value against cost. I see the Waves go on sale very often. I don't need a coupon or to wait for the planets to align to get the UAD version for possibly the same price. You may be right that it's very easy to save money with UAD. However, my point is that I perceive it to be easier to save more money with other companies. I can't outline the duration of each companies sales and how deep they discount vs their starting price. I suppose that data would be the real way to figure this out. But no one wants to bother with that amount of effort, so we may as well just agree to disagree.
It's ok that we see this issue differently. Mine is one of utility and strict relativity to other options in the market. If I weigh the options and prices, it appears that UAD has less opportunities to get "the best deal". Like I said though, I will concede that I could have saved more money in the past on UAD plugins. I think in the end they are still more expensive to start with, which makes discounts less effective and almost scarce when it comes to getting the plugin I need in a reasonable amount of time.
Agree to disagree, and that's totally fine by me. This is all relative perception anyway. I will heed your advice and implement it in the future to receive the best deals I can. I appreciate your thoughts on this.

It's all what works for each of us but just watch for the bundle 3 or 4 for $399, 6/$799 etc, as that lets you pick exactly what plugs ins you want. Sure it would be great if we can buy UA plugs for $30 bucks each, but if I can buy a $300 plug for 2/3rds off, it is also true that notionally I have saved $200 per plug and had choice. This is also the registration deal, so strategic to think abut it, if one is considering buying a new Apollo, yes, more money but also a direct savings. For example, you can currently buy a new apollo for 20% off and save 66% on up to 10 plugs ins, that is like an almost $2500 saving off retail. Or last year they were giving away Octo cards; a direct $1,000 savings. That is why I am somewhat circumspect when people raise concerns about UA pricing. It's true, that UA retail price appear high, but there are ways to save money.

Not that I'm aware of, but I'd as CS to get the definitive answer. It's to combat piracy and illicit transferring of devices. I won't go into the gory details, but crooks come up with "creative" ways of taking advantage of our system.

IF you use paypal, the apollo would theoretically be insured but no one actually insures used software sales,so buyer beware.

Correct. What's sad is that those buyers don't realize that the moment they update the units, it all goes away.

Drew, since you're here, I'd like to mention that I would like to be able to sell or trade some of my UAD plug-ins. I bought them, and feel I should be able to do what I want with what I purchase. I realize the company line regarding this is no different than other manufacturers, and that I actually purchased a lifetime rental and don't technically own anything. Me, I wish companies did what Tontracks did earlier, send a disc with the program, like the old days when you bought a program on a disc at a store.
Still, I think my point is valid. If I could sell plugs I no longer use, I would buy newer UAD plugs. The policy now is a way of rigging the game. I realize companies need to maximize profits, but doing so at the inconvenience of their customers only serves to make those customers frustrated, and willing to look elsewhere for better solutions.
With Softube, Fab Filter, Slate, Sound Toys and so many others around, UAD can no longer act as if they're the only game in town. UAD will not lose much, and will probably gain as much back in customer satisfaction. I hesitate to buy plugs because of this. It sometimes takes a while to fully learn and integrate a plug-in into a project, so even the generous free demo time really doesn't prevent mistakes as well as I wish. I've demo'd plugs and bought them, only to discover it wasn't quite what I needed, and after spending say..$275 on it, I hesitate to buy yet another. If I could return that at a 50% loss, to be used toward another UAD purchase, I would be glad to.

send a disc with the program, like the old days when you bought a program on a disc at a store. I'm not expert, but I think that even then, purchase of the media included a license to use, but not outright ownership of the code. Software developers quickly adopted the practice of making users "Accept" the fine print prior to installation, and the fine print includes language defining the conditions of use. But I agree, the license has value and can be "owned" by the end user, if not the code itself. If a license is legally obtained/owned, it should be legally transferrable. In a perfect world, license transfer on a per-plugin basis should be supported whenever possible. If only the assholes of the world would refrain from criminal theft.
