That's interesting, thanks guitfiddler! When hardware manufacturers get into speaker design, it's rarely a knockout, so a UAD speaker is a big wait and see thing. I wouldn't get excited about it considering many speaker manufacturers have been doing exclusively that for decades.
Now if their 3 way is under $1,500, I'd be curious. But, the Avantone Abbey's I used to own weren't much more than that, and they were fantastic speakers, nothing less than $3,500 competed with them when they came out. So that sets a pretty high bar for any "affordable" 3 way speaker.

Yeah, LOL! UA could actually do something like this and sell it though.

Ah, no offence, but referencing $300 plug ins, low value coupons and expensive satalite is somewhat misleading as over the last few years UA has aggressively discounted all these things, gave away satalite for free, had all kinds of sales and regularly given away all kinds of coupons, repeatedly. It has also significantly discounted its Ultimate package: all UA plug ins and at the same time discounted satalite. Only the impatient pays full pop and that’s a choice they make: you have options. So, the UA culture and business model has been evolving. It will be interesting to see what this next step is and how major a change it is. As I think you all know, I sold all my UA stuff wanting to free up my investment out of concerns for the negative impact of the possible introduction of a subscription model, the inability to sell individual plug ins, wanting a more native system and a better interface. All that being said, there are still things I like about UA, the plug in quality and I am curious what apollo mkiii and X will feature.
No offense taken. However, referencing actual numbers and pricing is misleading? I disagree. Define "aggressively discounted". How much of the year do they discount a given plugin?
I wait for sales, too. I have seen them. So I get a $25, maybe $50 dollar coupon, and the sale is usually $50 off the $300 dollar price, for instance. That sale brings us back down to pricing that is more in the range of other company's prices. And before someone claims apples to oranges, you most certainly can compare as a consumer, in fact you should as it is your prerogative. Sure, UAD might spend more hours on the plugin development. More money. I get it, maybe they are appropriately priced. I am still a consumer in the end, and I don't have access to the numbers of why they are priced the way they are.
I also have to buy their hardware to run it. As someone who already has aggregate devices of UAD-2, I don't need another satellite even if it is discounted.
Compare this to say, Waves, who discounts plugins from $200 to $29 dollars and you have a heck of a deal. Yes, there is the waves update plan, but even with that once a year, you are far ahead. Waves also discounts every weekend, or day practically.
I don't like being tethered to hardware, and I don't like update plans either. But one is certainly more affordable in the long run. And UAD does have upgrade fees, in a way, for new versions of plugins. They used to give fairly good discounts to legacy owners, but when I upgraded my Neve 88rs, I still paid $150 to $200 as a legacy owner.
One area UAD does well price wise is the compressor collections. Several well modeled 1176's or la2a's for the bundle price is good.
My point is, UAD is pricey in my opinion despite discounts. Yes, the plugins sound great. I use them on every mix. They are pricey, though. I don't think that's an unfair assessment in the least.

UA has sales all year long and you can certainly typically save way more than than 10%. It's a waiting game with Ua as it typically does not deeply discount plugs soon after their release., but let's see a few year's ago I picked up the 73 unison plug in for like $75 after a coupon and a sale.
Retail prices seem high but ,for example, right now you can buy the Ultimate 6 bundle (95 plugs in) for just under 4 grand that includes an octo T bolt card ( that normally seems for at least a grand) so works out to be like $32 bucks per plug in.
With UA you have to pick your battles. While you may not like having to buy its hardware, UA also typically includes a registration bundle deal when you buy that: 3/399, 6/799. 10/1199. So your average price for say $300 plug ins is like 1/3rd of retail
I understand the perception that UA is high priced. I just think the reality for the strategic buyer is that you average price can be an awful lot lower ?

The subscription plan possibility is a main reason why I sold out. But I think it will be the new apollo (mkiii and new OS (x) and many new software features too. Or Logic bought UA ? Somebody sure bought them. It ain't the same camp it once was when Bill was at the helm I can promise you that. I don't blame him though. I'd have sold that headache, too.

UAD plugins are like crack cocaine. Some of them are just so good. And the "illusion" that you're getting a deal on a "$350 plugin" only fuels the buying spree.

UAD-X will include a new range of dual-core Sharc DSP chips which allow each input to X(cross) multiple cores and chips. So an input is no longer constrained by a single core or chip. Excellent, this will allow UA to develop MKIII versions where a single instance takes up an entire card and not just a whole chip! Yes, an entire credit card plugin will be more expensive than the hardware

A ten space rack mountable thunderbolt dsp satellite box for plugins. They are developing the Bricasti Reverb next.

I'd like a rack mount satellite that has 16 or 32 DSP power.

I didn't love math in school, even though I was good at it. So I chose to be musician instead of a computer programmer and when reading that article, I wondered how my life got to where I'm actually reading the info contained in that link. So, FPGA better for big jobs, DSP better for small. UAD's tasks are getting bigger, so change to FPGA is probable. Now someone tell me what the heck FPGA stands for. Field programmable gate array

That one computer in Germany that supposedly has everyone's profile for Google and all big corporations to market to us, and use our info at their discretion. Appropriately Named, "The Beast". That is the computer that UAD seeks! They will definitely need the processing power moving forward on their platform! LOL

Still with the friggin' ADAT I/O... derp!
The x16 better have AES or finally allow us to actually use the MADI I/O... jeeeeez.
What's under the hood DSP wise on these bad boys???
edit: I get it now... the x16 refers to 16 included plugins. Le sigh.
Compare this to the direction Metric Halo went on their new 3d lineup: "The processing power of the FPGA-based custom processors in 3d amount to roughly 30x the processing power of the DSP on the 2d Card. All the processors in the FPGA run with 1 sample of latency. All processors in the FPGA support their full capability at 192kHz. All of the audio transport in the system (with the exception of DSP processing) is managed completely in hardware."

I just think the reality for the strategic buyer is that you average price can be an awful lot lower ? I feel you are misrepresenting UA's sales. UA are now very strategic. There is only so much discount you can get on a plugin because they ensure your vouchers expire before or are not usable on on sale plugins. This is something that has changed in recent years and makes UA plugins expensive Sure, you can buy the high priced bundles as you have mentioned but that isn't viable for some people.

I guess we understand it differently. I had been a UA client for roughly 5-7 years and during that time the savings have increased and the discounts have deepened. The coupons mostly are window dressing and I think just a silly incentive from UA, the real savings are in its seasonal sales, registration deal, the combo 3,6 and 10 deals ( these are like 66% off who cares about a $25 coupon ?) and the recent sale in which ua cross-referenced with people's bought plug ins with the Ultimate prices and offered a discount price for the remaining plug ins.
I understand that not many buy the ultimate package but there are many people who track their purchases at UA forum who report average prices well below $100 and some below $50 per plug in.
It's very easy to save money with UA, first be patient and wait for a better deal, second, do the math and when UA offers a good combo price jump on it and third, be creative, for example, you can buy somebody else's used plugs in, move any duplicates to a second system and sell those.
Personally, I sold all my UA stuff but if I ever got back in, I would likely just buy one of the 10 plug registration deals and just live with those.

Lots of conjecture at UA forum about the leak personally I will wait for "official" release While I'm inclined to agree, the leaks come from fairly reliable sources as well as sales website caches. Unless every single distributor banded together for some elaborate prank, it looks like the only joke is the laughable 50% of power increase on decade old tech that my 4 year old iMac runs circles around.
