There are at least six different speakers labelled "NS10". Up to a 5.1 set. None of these can be called "studio monitors" as far as I'm concerned. As Svart stated, the difference between the standard and the "studio" version is minimal. It's all just marketing. Yamaha couldn't sell them to the Hifi crowd, they ended up in a studio by accident and that's where the legend started... What perhaps could be used as a monitor, is the much bigger NS1000. Hardly sold outside of Japan and reached mythical proportions with the audiofools in the latest years. Any decent pair that appears on ebay will easily reach a 1000$. I like how the NS10 sounds, but can't listen to them for longer than half an hour or so. The word "papery" sounds right. I can imagine them being useful as a second opinion, tho. The NS1000 and a bunch of the pro drivers proved that Yamaha could build decent speakers. Most of the myth of better versions of the NS10 probably have more to do with retooling and cost cutting as time went on.

Can anybody speak on the subject of Amphions vs. NS10s?
You can get a pair of One12s for around the same cost of NS10s (assuming you'd replace the tweeters and woofers), so I'm wondering what the move is here.

I dig 10’s and have them sitting on my desk alongside a pair of NS-4’s and my Barefoots. The 10’s are super useful for me, but I can’t imagine choosing them over a pair of Amphions.

Would never part with our pair of NS-10M STUDIO monitors (came out of THE Hit Factory!!) paired with a Yamaha P2201 Amp. Sublime.
I've tried to mix on almost every speaker out there - but I simply know the NS-10M Studio's so well... also run a MONO, vintage Auratone that's absolutely amazing.
That being said, there is a MASSIVE acclaimation process when first starting to use NS-10's.... I can honestly say it wasn't until almost a year in that I really could say and FELT like I could trust them 110%.
BUT - we're also running them with an Adam Sub8 (good sub for the money!). I wouldn't want to mix a record on NS-10's WITHOUT a sub... just IMO!
As always, YMMV... ;-)

Yeah I think the first year I was always boosting the “air” not realizing Ns10ms don’t have air. Oops! I figured it out but I was desperate, got some car stereo tweeters from Walmart for like $7, attached them in parallel and rested them on top aimed at the ceiling. It worked! Eventually got a smart phone and laptop to check tweeter on, and got smarter. Those were some hard painful lessons those years. Still need to get the right sub for them... someday..
