Kick sounds a little present for a D12 w/o some serious EQ'ing around 1,5K. I think you're on the right track with the compression and a chamber on the snare. Just spitballin' here though.

I was wondering if D12's were more of a European thing at that time. So possibly an EV RE20 or 666? That seems to be mentioned in Memphis threads about the time period. I think an EV 666 was being used in Muscle Shoals around that time.

Fairly certain Ardent had a Spectrasonics console at that time. I have a feeling it’s a RE20 inside the drum, overhead and snare and a lot of compression, probably from something like a UA 175A.
I’m sure somewhere that’s all documented, it’s pretty amazing how much stuff they’ve been able to find over the years on Alex and Big Star

Almost guaranteed to be an open kick (no front head) with pillow. Felt beater. Metal snare, possibly aluminum based on the dryness of the ring, so an acrolite or supraphonic most likely. Cymbals are going to be standard 70's zildjian fare with the patina, not polished.
Heads will be single thickness with lots of tissue and tape.

The Neumann overhead/room mic is probably the thing that'll give you the most familiar sounding classic "70's" vibe. Usually it's 67's overhead. Nothing beats them.
Forgot to say Alex Chilton opened for my old band The Demons at The Village Gate. He was a good guy and sounded great.

Clearly an EV RE20 on kick, dbx 160 compressor. Snare sounds like a 201 with an 1176 and PLENTY of EQ.

Wow, that recording sounds incredible. so rich and deep. Just put on some modern mixes to compare, lacking the mids of the bass etc. How did we get tot he point of scooping out all the fatness in tracks these days?

Most modern metal stuff tends to cut them mids, It does sound clear in one aspect but not rich sounding.

To me the greatest 70s drum sounds came from Muscle Shoals and Roger Hawkins who used U87s on overheads an RE20 on kick and a KM84 on hi hat. The bassline Bob West ( James Taylor, Michael Jackson) plays is pretty sweet... www.notreble.com/buzz/2016/05/06/bass-transcription-bob-west-bass-line-on-odetta-hit-or-miss/

I just spent A LOT of time figuring out how to make my [metal] band's record sound like the exact opposite of that. I hope it worked. haha.

That could definitely be a 666.
