He definitely surprises when he lets loose. He can sing his ass off when rocking hard. It's rare that someone sensitive and heartfelt enough to sing a vocal like "So Hard to be Without You" can sing something like Gimme Something Good or Halloween Head.

And just to add - I’m not a total hater...hey, I find myself humming FGL tunes. It’s just that there doesn’t seem to be any room in the market for much else. I agree with this. I'm not a hater of modern bowel movements. And I'm being serious. I just think that there is no room today for consideration of deep topics in writing and production. Let's rewind about 15 years. Tracy Bird had a smash hit with Watermelon Crawl. I once hated that song (but mostly his whinny voice) but even then found myself humming it. I look back on that song now and think it's a well written tune that tells a good story and takes me out of my everyday hum drum, and places me in a situation. Puts me in another persons shoes so to speak. Isn't this what we try to do with music? The answer to that question is yes, that's what we once tried to do. But today??? Not so much. Most people couldn't care less about anyone else situation in life. Therefore we have modern music. Sing about MEEEEEEEEEE. What IIIIIIIII want to hear. Few look outward these days. Most look for things (and songs) to reinforce their own identities. Which is why we have what we have today in modern music. My 2 cents and I could be way off. Hope no one takes offense to this post but I feel like music is way more than identity politics. Music is special to me. It's a microscope into the human experience. We sometimes cheapen it and that to me is heartbreaking.

It's become Muzak and that fact is reflected in sales.

That vocal is so smashed it hurts. Love the guitars. Kinda sounds like a 175/176 on there to me... When I'm mixing the stuff that I know is going over all the streaming and terrestrial, if you want that ethereal thing happening on the vox EFX and then on basically every single other instrument....... Something has to get pinned and pulled up front or it'll be like hearing it through a sea shell. The EFX, all crushed and bit crunched/overdriven with a bit of dry back in....... I just know for me, if I don't lock something down in that type of deal it'll just wash and wash.

Man, I love that woman's voice. And she's a hottie too . . . and my fiancé won't mind me saying that since she has just a bustier version of the same figure. LOL

Only saw the first tube on SNL but was not impressed. I know, “High Horse” was a bold choice for the first tune. That track on the album is super-processed to perfection...it would be quite difficult to pull it off live. Slow Burn was her second track and she was much more at ease.

Here are shots of the liner from the LP. Wow, there sure are a lot of interesting credits, like: "Engineered for Mix By" and "Editing" Seems like a lot of extra effort goes into these big records. I'm used to one guy recording and mixing it and another guy mastering it. "Voice of Reason"? That's a job title?

All the other things aside, I agree with John, I really just like the song. The vibe fits the lyric, and the production brilliantly keeps it growing.
I'm not that familiar with Musgraves' work, but some seems a bit contrived, and some seems really sincere. I like the simple, sincere vibe a lot. It's refreshing to not hear a female vocalist trying to reach the stars with histrionics for a change. I get that it doesn't hurt that she's a beauty, but I think she's earned and deserves the attention she's getting.

Johnkenn what do you make of that vocal sound? Is that something like a 251 into a CAPI/API squished with a CL1B? Just spitballin’ here. I'm guessing a CL1b is involved in this sound, yes. That comp is on my list big time. Finding one used is like finding a hen's tooth though.

I’ve been snooping around a bit and from what I can piece together, it’s a Tele 251 ELA M (vintage I suspect but not confirmed) and a Fairchild 670 on the vocals. Preamp unknown.

People play fast and loose with what they call mics these days (like calling an ioaudio MK67 a "U67", it's close but it's not) hence my not being positive about the era of mic used.
