Best I own or have used. I have owned 5 models, still have 7 channels of P4 DMS and P3500/S. First call. They don't do an 1176 thing, or a vari-mu thing, or the smushy crunchy SSL thing.

Yes! I own the P4DMS (with HPF and Carnhill iron) and the P3EX. Top shelf compressors, no doubt. That new box looks amazing.

I have P3 and P4 buss comps. Love them.
That is very impressive. First time I have seen it. Also wow.

For $8,000 and 5RU it better be.... who knows, it just came out. IMO no compressor is worth $8k but then.. I have an unquenchable thirst for things like this and I don't blow my money out on cars or watches and most importantly I'm not married so.. |

The P4S ME has a firm muscular box tone and the behavior under compression is stealthy and increases density without being overt in regards to time constants when set correctly.

I have an unquenchable thirst for things like this and I don't blow my money out on cars or watches and most importantly I'm not married so.. Truer words have never been said. The one time I went "screw it" when I was single I bought a PT HD system. Unfortunately the resale value of that plummeted when HDX came about. You'll probably keep more value with a boutique compressor! |

I find in many many VCA comps that if you are trying to do very little, you start to notice the transition from 'none' to 'slightly some' in a negative way. The FCS was the first I used that would let you stay very near the threshold without negative consequences. In other words, very well behaved transitions. Easily why they are used so much in mastering facilities. I have a lot of heavy color everywhere else in my chain, and the FCS has always delivered a better sounding result when I want to preserve existing color while adding gain control, and has always sounded better than any 'transparent' software I've tried. Unlike every other compressor I've used, there's not a single task I'd keep off the list, if it suits the style I'm going for. I might pick a different box for a particular tone or mangle it does, but that's about it.

I am a Mastering engineer and everything is micro detail in my world....
Most of us can hear component level changes in gear in this line of work because we are listen to 1/2 Db changes of EQ all day......

Some people don't like them, and my guess is they are looking for some obvious artifact signature as much as they are gain reduction, and they are happy enough with software.

Roger told me he had problems selling enough of the Pico 502 because people found them too clean and transparent. I like mine, but they don't get enough use. I think the lack of markings mentally messes me up. If I don't have enough time to really dial them in I tend to not use them.

The Tube Equipment Corp SR-71 Blackbird compressor definitely is - it's the most phenomenal compressor I've ever been unable to hear in my life. It's essentially a Fairchild 670 clone with some very carefully thought out mods to take advantage of advances in the technology that didn't exist when the original was in production. I got to audition one at AES some years back and it was just unbelievable how good it is. You can't hear it - even when it's applying really significant compression the audio still sounds untouched.
