Yeah, that's tough. Mark made me a Blumlein mic years ago with a center body hole I can drop a DPA omni into for ambisonic steering or other tricks, works pretty well. That's fascinating! Yeah, I'd like to see a pic of this, Doug!

I dropped by some friends band practice and set up the Omni8 TF08, a Sennheiser MKH40 SDC cardioid, and a Neumann KM131 SDC omni to see what the contrasts were. Yes, all very different mics. Dropped them in the middle of the band about vocal height, which was electric guitars and vocals facing the mics, drums behind the mics, and bass to one side, nothing closer than 4-5 feet.
The TF08 again sounded the clearest and most open on top. Again, seeming brighter because of it, but very smooth. Had the most and brightest cymbals which could be related to off axis pattern. Good bass extension, felt lighter but also deeper/cleaner in some ways.
The MKH40 SDC has what people describe as a dark tubby weight to it, and it sounded it in comparison. Interesting in that both mics are described as being very flat on axis, so I'd guess most differences are in the off-axis response. There was a satisfying lower mid presence to the kick and bass that the TF08 lacked, this mic always sounds closer to the source than it is, where the TF08 generally feels like it can be worked a lot closer.
The KM131 had the biggest bass as expected (pressure omni), and the darkest top, also as expected since the drums were 180º off axis. Also supposed to be a ruler flat mic on-axis. In the end I'd probably mix this mic with the TF08 for the final blend due to the bass characteristics.

A couple months back I had another female singer who is a real belter/shouter, and I put up the TF08 and a U67. The TF08 was her choice of the two, and it did sound the most honest and natural. The 67 sounded much fatter, but the top was rolled off and cloudy in comparison. The fattness was another example of the difference in proximity effect.
I've got clearance to post some samples as soon as I can get them sorted.

And any other TF08 samples from folks who have used the mic!
