My kids, too, tell me I should quit while I'm ahead. Ha ha can't blame them. Any thoughts on the technical choices, compression, reverb, mic placement etc? For vocals with any SDC try it off axis you will find less need for a wind screen.

The KM84 is as plug and play as any mic ever made. You pretty much stick it anywhere in front of what you're recording and it sounds good. Then you just move it around a little to optimize. If you do use the 84 for vocals, you must get a pop screen or it'll likely bite back at you.

In fact it's pretty particular on where you place it otherwise I struggle with pick noise- which is what I find most annoying when recording ac guitar.

Hmm.. I imagine they might vary. I've been borrowing a pair from a friend, and they do sound different, one being much nicer. They're from the same year, originally bought at the same time. True benchmarks are difficult if not impossible to find with old mics. I do know what you mean about pick sound, the KM84 certainly has a certain attack that could be considered an emphasis in that area. I like it on very strummy songs with lots of tracks. For more acoustic guitar and vocal style tracks I like LDC's.
I've taken some heat for saying it too often, but you might look into the Soyuz 0-13. I chose it over the KM84's I had here, and I loved the 84. You can probably get a brand new pair for just a bit more than you can sell the 84 for.

Greetings.
My apologies in advance if this is OT. Now that the 47fet and the U67 reissues seem to be established, I had heard a rumor that Neumann may re-release the KM-84. Has anyone else heard this?
Again my apologies if this is OT. As you were.
Regards, -09

Haven't heard about a KM84 reissue, but it would be cool if they did. Their U 67reissue seems to be as good as ever from the early reports I've seen. Considering the age and use most U67's have had, there's a good chance new one probably sounds better than 90% of the originals do now.

OK, will do ;-) Hey Brewer, sorry we got a little lost here. You're still new to the forum, so welcome, we usually have a pretty good time here. Can you post a file of the vocal you did with the 84? Sorry to have taken so long to get back and post something. Here's something I did with the km84 where I recorded vocal and guitar together. The km84 is about 2' to 3' away from the neck/body joint with my head tilted back to not sing directly into mic. Hopefully I won't get grilled too much for the reverb and compression. soundcloud.com/user-68664105/nommhardwareLove the tune man. Makes me want to grab a pint of whiskey and party.

Sounds pretty good there Brewer! Funny, I recognized the sound of the 84 right away. There's a certain ack-ack that no other mic has. I love it most times, but sometimes I need something smoother.
If you could get the vocal a little louder while keeping the guitar volume the same, you could definitely use that sound in a professional context. It had a nice immediacy, like I was hearing a live radio show.

Prior to using just the 84 I was also using the gz251, which is a great mic, but I didn't like how it mixed with the guitar.

I'm hijacking this thread. If two of you hated your KM84 on vocals, ship them to me! I'll even give you dollars! Or maybe you have two you're about to throw out? Never fear! Again, for dollars, I will take them off of you!

It’s a very different sound, but since you might find yourself keeping it hung high and off axis for a second vocal mic. I know a guy who did it for years, never told anybody it was live or that the vocal track they were using wasn’t the EXpensive LDC they had in front of them.

I tried the KM84 on vocals thing before, and it was pretty surprising how usable it was!
For reference, I tried it on this cover for a friend...

Check it out!

I used the KM84 on all the backing vocals in this tune, as well as the acoustic guitars, shaker, tambourine
just a fantastic mic!
cheers

Sounds great Wiz! I tried recording an egg shaker for the first time last week, with KM84. I had to sit about a meter back and turn the preamp gain down another 15dB to get a non clipped recording, compared to finger picked acoustic. Was shocked how easily it clipped the converter/how loud it was, doesn't sound that much louder in the room, must be those crazy high frequency transients!
