You guys should shut up about the 84! 🤔 Be sure to shock mount it. I’m afraid that ship has sailed, Bob

Never fear guys. I have a plan to tank KM84 sales along with it's uncanny reputation for once and for all - so we can all stock up on em while no one is looking..... I've been paying Martin for every KM84 post where he says the Soyuz 0-13 SDC sounds better than a KM84. I think it's starting to work!!!! He's convincing!! Save up your pennies. This time next year they will be only $750 again. Mark my words. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . or not....... Just kidding. Thanks for letting me take a cheap shot Martin - hope you're not mad. All in good fun!!!! I was feeling kinda silly looking at the unavailability and rising pricing on 84's.... Someday I hope to try out the Soyuz 0-13 SDC. Based solely on your accolades!! <thumbsup> Cheers.

I've been looking for a KM86 for ages (already have 4x KM84's) but they don't appear often and seem to hover around the $2500 USD mark. The other consideration is a Gefell UM70.

and use a windscreen.
My friend has a pair, and a drawer full of old 414's, U47 FET as well. He's quite old now, so when the time comes, I believe they'll come to me. I do hope that's not for a very long time though. I can always borrow them. Still, I'd be just as happy, or happier with the Soyuz 0-13.
John, how's your 0-13 holding up? Is it showing well compared to the 84 after you've had it for a while?
I've learned you really don't know a mic well until you've had it for a few months, and I only had the Soyuz 0-13 for a couple of weeks. Ragan's right, if you handed me a KM84 and an 0-13 and said pick one, today, I'd take the 0-13. That said, my best sound to date was when I had the stereo KM-84 setup
Oops, I forgot the Ragan plan, so never mind. Those KM84's are no biggie ;-)

Well 84 isn't even a multiple of 13 so 13 must be a better root sound: right ? ( guess who flunked grade 12 math and science ?

I was just playing along and pretending to downplay the KM84 to help bring costs down.

86s were rarely found in indi studios because they were about the same price as an 87. They were mostly used by label-owned studios and motion picture scoring stages where string sections were recorded. Lots of those studios are still in operation.

Bob, how would you compare them to the Schoeps?

Lots of those studios are still in operation. Not around LA. Most of the scoring stages have been dismantled. Latest on the chopping block is The Bridge. Up FS now. But yes, I got my 86's from one of LA's top scoring engineers who is selling all his mics. What's that say.... Hello EU.

i love when SDC sound great on Vocals. I often use the M-300 (with a pop filter or windsock) or Josephson E22S Yeah I rather like the E22S on vocals too.

I've always thought Schoeps had more of a "hi fi" sound. Only the Schoeps hypercardioids have as uniform a pattern as an 84 or 86.
Too bad about Bridge although it's only 7 or 8 years old. Most of the large studios I was thinking of that would have bought new 86s during the '60s are still running.

What about a TLM-103? It might be a little clean for some, but it's a great little mic. Haven't tried one on singing vocals, but I've heard them on VO (male voice) and they really sounded nice.

I've only heard a TLM-103 in headphones in a store, but there was a U87 and TLM-102 next to it, and a few other mics to compare. The 103 had the Neumann sound and size, the 102 didn't. The 103 was a little bright and edgy, but probably very useable if paired with the right preamp and a little EQ.
I looked to see if I still had my shootout between the KM84 and the Soyuz 0-13, but it was gone. The Soyuz was hands down the better vocal mic.

The TLM103 has been the proverbial internet forum shit fight for eons.... personally I wouldn't invest in one as they pinch and get nasally/ edgy on many vocal sources; having said that it gave a very expensive sound to a Samoan woman with a wide and mellow voice I borrowed it for years ago. In that instance it sounded like a very fine example of the Neumann line. Not versatile enough to drop dollars on though.
The 84 can be great positioned correctly as 'plosives will kill you otherwise and the early '80's 451 I also have has been used to cut a whole album with great results so it's horses for courses as usual.
Cheers, Ross

I bought two TLM103s at an auction, and tried them then flipped them.
They didn't spin my wheels.

Around 5:45 in this video it looks like Winwood has an M49, K84 and either 2 87's or 67's, I can't tell:

I'm assuming these are U87s? ...or U67s? Wow! What a sound, eh? It's hard to tell if 67's don't have the traditional tuchel yoke - which these don't. So, I'm guessing they are 67's, but they very well could be 87's. Difficult to tell without seeing the other end of the mic cable. But that sound,,,,,man, iconic. I suspect you could put up 57's and he would still sound amazing. Thanks. One of my favorite songs.
