Wow that is a killer, killer deal. Like. Gobsmackingly good. Mine are semi rough shape cosmetically but I am still grateful I got them for $900 and $1200 considering the price of new. Put it on a horn aka trumpet trombone F horn or a snare drum sometime. Mix it up a little, Doc!!! I can't even tell you the prices I got on some other mics at the same time. Iconic classics that I'll likely never even see up FS again. Or at best, rarely. My faves from this group being the KM86's, followed closely by the KM53's... The KM53's seem to be so rare that I can't even find any sold items to figure out what they are worth. But I got a smoking deal....and I'm grateful. They will appreciate nicely while I use em... It's good to be connected and find the deals. I'm happy for ya. Use them in good health!

And it sure doesn't matter now for those poor guys that are gone. Fentanyl was involved with both of their deaths. I almost died from a Fentanyl overdose in 2003. I consider myself very lucky.

My pair of TLM170’s are amongst my favorite mics in the studio. So natural with no stridency and they are not bright. Very smooth sounding. Yes, they are revealing, and so they shine on beautiful sources

Down the block on 32nd there's a guy wearing shades and a pea-coat. Tell him you'll take a teenth of health for starters.

I think of it a bit like a large diaphragm KM84. It’s such a flattering mic. It just can do no wrong. Unless the source sucks... then it will capture an excellent recording of something that sucks, lol.

Okay it's kind of funny on a forum where most of us are centered around the world of pop and what I'll classify as complimentary mics we are seeing guys admit to discovering or loving what I'll call bare it all mics like the Sennhieser MKH series or Neumann TLM170 & U89. As we're experiencing, they show off the specifics of the pre in an enhanced manner. I'm putting them through 1940's pre's, unlike the classical and remote guys. They are accurate and pretty boring in a Sytek.

This is pretty much how I feel. I want a pair of all my favorite mics. Maybe one day down the road. Right now I have a ghetto 49 pair of my FleA49 and CM49. lol. I also have (2) Blue Stage Is with B8 Caps though. It's like having 2 TLM 103s. I want another B7 cap. I've actually been debating grabbing the B3 capsule for my BLUE Stage I or II and seeing how it sounds, since that's their take on the TLM 170/U89 Capsule. Maybe If I see one used. In your world a nice pair of 170's would be a perfect stereo pair, add a Hardy M1 2 ch + with Transformers and the combo would work perfectly in Opera or Crooner world! As much as I think Daves mic's and the Blue have serves you well, I think it's time for a real quantity stereo pair as goal! Yeah, a good stereo pair has been on my list, although I was going to start looking at a pair of SDCs or Ribbons, not MDCs like the TLM170 or U89. I have a tendency to lean toward some color. Clean mics, like my old KSM44 end up through tube preamps. I'm honestly not sure the TLM170 would be my thing. For this reason I was sort of hoping for a pair of U67ish mics. The MK67 was just too dark to do the trick and the CM67LE Dave made for me wasn't quite right either as it replicated the frequency de-emphasis with a roll-off. I tend to go the root of Al Schmitt with my approach; limited EQ, mic placement tricks, picking the right mic for each job. But, I would be game to give a TLM170 a try. As for the Hardy, they're nice. I didn't love singing through it either time I tried it, but I'm sure if you want clarity it's a great preamp. For a while I was leaning toward picking up two Grace 501s. I'd used a Grace a few times and liked their warm and neutrality. Also know they are good for ribbons. I actually picked up the SSL Alpha Channel, which should arrive on Monday. Not as clean as the others, but cleaner than my ACMP-84, with a dumbed down version of the SSL EQ, and the VHD to play with for color when I want it. I'm looking forward to trying it out. I've recorded through a couple of SSL consoles in my time as a studio singer and as recently as last month at jeremygillespie 's place. Also, I've used the Super Analogue Channel Strip. The Alpha Channel is not the same, but it came highly recommended by my mentor and even Jeremy gave it a thumbs up for that kind of sound. We'll see. As for the BLUE mics, the Stage II is really top notch, especially with the B7. The Stage I is meh. I'd love to hear the BLUE caps on a CMV563, as they were designed to be interchangeable with the original Bayonet style caps and work on the CMV563... Maybe down the road. In theory they work on the new ones too, but you need to pick up the bayonet adapter piece. I wouldn't mind hearing an M7 on the BLUE either.

Thanks. It may be the best mic here for my VO sound... I like the proximity the cardioid mode brings.

I wonder if the Hardy you tried was an M1 or dual servo and if it had the output Transformer, for most the M1 with the Jensen is the perfect cross of clean and color!

Maybe you should try a pair of Schoeps, with maybe MK21 or MK22 capsules. These are often used as spot mics in classical recording. Yeah, it’s one I’ll definitely try when I’m ready, especially because everyone has recommended them to me. Also curious about the Telefunken Ela M260 and M60 FET. We’ll see. The goal will be to try a bunch when I’m ready. jtc111 has a nice pair of gefell’s I’m hoping to try at some point. Right now I’ve got some other hardware purchases to happen before I look at any other microphones... and BLUE announced a few new caps. One sounds a bit like a U67 kind of sound and another an M49 kind of sound. I’m going to have to look into those further when they are out.

That mic was used through an Audio Upgrades mic pre on the Vanessa Williams hit, "The Right Stuff".

Ok guys. I'm finally starting to get the TLM 170 fan fare. I put the low cut filter on and recorded a quick clip and I instantly realized that I had made captured the modern classical sound with it. Looking forward to doing some nice recording with this guy.
