Last year there was a sweet U47 build on Reverb that I was really into. Point-to-point build using a Flea Body/headbasket, Flea transformer, Thiersch Blue Line capsule, EF12 tube hand selected by Andreas Grosser from his personal stash, LeWilson power supply, all housed in a custom converted vintage tweed suitcase. All for basically the cost of parts. The guy that built it set out to build the best U47 he could, and shot out parts (capsules, transformers, tubes, etc) at every stage. I hesitated too long cause I had invested in another mic that didn't end up working out. Been thinking about that mic ever since, even though I never heard it. However, it was used on the Son Little song "Your Love Will Blow Me Away When My Heart Aches" as well as on every track on his own project, The Grand Nationals, "Come Home" I contacted the original seller last week seeking advice for my own build plans. He turned me on to the guy that bought it from him. I ended up shooting that guy a message and offered to buy it from him, still for around the cost of parts. It'll be here in a couple days.

Whoa, that's a fantastic end to the story indiehouse! The tracks sound great. Good luck, let us know how it all turns out.

27years latter and 2 or 3 tune up calls latter those 81's are still up over the Baldwin and the pretty wood boxes with KM84's sit on a shelf with 27 years worth of dust! Anyone who can make 81's sound better than KM84's gets HIGH PRAISE from me!!!!! Kudo's Eric!! Thanks Bill The 81 is really a better mic the we give it credit for, there was a time they were more expensive in Europe than 84's! They are pretty much almost ruler flat. The thing here is that I knew SM81's on piano at the time I had spent 6 months going around NorthAmerica with Mics an 8 space rack and wedges. One of those tour where you don't get any real time and a different piano with a different tuner if it was tuned everynight. You have no choice but learn the mics and how to make them work. Micing piano live in crappy rooms with wedges every night is very different from in the studio, often your fighting feedback more than shooting for tone. I know most of you know this but anytime I use this story in a lecture I emphasize is this is all about knowing the tool at hand I knew the SM81's on piano at the time,I had probably used KM84's 10 times at this point, never live , never piano. I probably could have gotten a decent tone out of the KM84's but my secondary hunch was there was something wrong with these mics and everybody including Elton John's piano tech had tried with them so being able to get a great tone in minimal time where all had failed would make my reputation and it did !

In the old days when it was easier to contact buyers of others sales on EBay I made a habit of congratulating others who had beat me and letting them know if they ever wanted to part with it to shoot me an email. You would be suprised how often this paid off!
