I would LOVE to have one. I mean, Love. But I ain’t paying $7000 for it. What would be your breaking point? Would you jump on it for $6k?

Agreed on $3500.
It's just a mic. I know it's legendary and sounds like nothing else, but I've spent far less on MRI's.
Say, on another note. Does anyone have 7000 bucks I could borrow? I need a....... sandwich. Or something.

So when will anyone be able to hear or examine this thing? I’m making no purchase decisions until there is some credible word on the street.

I should say this: I wouldn’t pay that much for a non-limited run ala a Telefunken. Vintage is probably a safe investment and I bet this will retain its value. But with the current state of the industry, I just can’t justify spending that much on tools. Kind of like buying a Ferrari to use as a cab.
Edit: I should say “my” state of the industry. If I were getting $3000 a mix, then yeah, I could see it. But alas, I am not.

"I should say “my” state of the industry."
And most of us on this forum.... Funny thing is, I have a couple of originals, and I really don't get what all the fuss is about?
I actually use my 87's more often.

I actually use my 87's more often. You kind of just made my day. I honestly really enjoy the tone of my ADK z67. It's quite nice. Reminds me of all the 67 stuff I've heard. I'd rather be able to have several ADK mics of varieties vs one 67. I do like some of the u87ai sounds I've heard as well. Just mixed an album that used them on some childrens vocals and it was heavenly.

Maybe I should start a different thread...but what’s with all the 87ai hate I see? I think the thing sounds pretty damn good. At least the ten year old version I played with a while back.

$3500. unrealistic per 47Fet price & 67 demand. How much are the REDD & Upton worth ... To you?
If I didn't own a C800G, I'd pay $7K for a new one 'cause I know what I can get from it for my vox.

I'm not sure, honestly. I think they can sound fantastic and they really do sound like the successor to the u67 to me. The recording hacks video comparing the old u87 to the AI really had me wanting the AI. Of course, there are claims that they vary. But I've liked what I heard. I do think that a new AI is a little expensive, but a fairly minty used one is pretty affordable.

Right. That's what John was saying. He doesn't expect a u67 for $3500. That is just his price point for what it's worth. I would have to agree. If I was Capitol records and had money to throw around and charged Capitol money for sessions, I'm sure I wouldn't bat an eye.

I'm not saying they should sell it for that. I'm saying personally, I have a hard time justifying anything over that.

I don't have too much experience with the Ai's, but tons of experience with the vintage ones. Personally, I love em. I don't think there's a huge difference between the two from what I've heard from credible engineers I trust. Then again, I've always leaned towards solid state mics for some reason.... Go figure.

Wait the U87i and U87ai are both Solid state. Or maybe your last comment was referring to U87 vs U67?

Just giving the 87 it's due and saying I like SS mics quite often over tube mics. And yeah, I am aware both 87 models are SS.

I got to sing into the Neumann U67 reissue today at Neumann's NAMM booth. Exciting, but (at least on my voice) I felt I needed more distance from it, to get a better evaluation. As it was, so far I prefer the various U67 "inspired" variations ala Royer/Soyuz/Bock. I really wanted to try the U47 FET reissue too, but surprisingly, Neumann didn't set that up.

I have about 10 NOS EF86s I can swap in and out with whatever they're using, once I get mine.

Like Dr Bill.... "I don't have too much experience with the Ai's," In fact I, ACTUALLY I HAVE NO EXPERIENCE WITH THEM! My earlier comment in this thread was about my original 70's era U87's, and I love them! And I also agree with John, what's not to like in a great vintage 87? You know, I've read all this stuff (posts on forums) about the 67's over the last 5 or 10 years, and I've kept pretty quiet about it, cause I don't want to start any shit, But, to me they're really no big deal~! Def, not worth 7K... How the hell can the majority of us justify that expense for one microphone in today's studio environment I believe people have lost their minds over equipment? I guess, You can't fix stupid! I'm done, gonna have a beer...

It's the age old case of "cantafforditis" that makes something seem better than it actually is. I'm sure it's a great mic, but there are many others...
I actually wouldn't mind a u87 AI. Maybe I'll go after used. I see some for about $1000 less than new for mint.
Would compliment my TLM 170s well, which are lovely mics themselves.
