plugin eq......
so here's my thing. i'm needing more from a plugin eq but i can't find the one i need.
i'll leave linear stuff out of this discussion. i'm chasing analogue sounding eq. the current favourite is the vos eq. i'll most likely buy that so i can get the extra features. i really like the sound it has. it's not trying to smack me in the face, it's smooth, it's warm, it's nice and it does what an eq should.
but it's on the clean side of things.
next are the other plugin eq's i've used. 560, 550, puig, some neve type stuff. out of those the waves 560 is my preferred. however my issue is i'm finding most plugin eq's to be too full on. they either do nothing or they do too much. most get crunchy when pushed and when i stack them my mixes start to sound digital.
so i'm looking for a more real version of real. something more obvious in colour than the VOS but less intense than the other options. ie. less of the harsh and more of the warmth. something i can push a lot or a little and not want to scratch my eyes out.
i did some research and on another site it seems the acustica audio stuff gets the nod for what i am describing.
so i wonder what others here think.

I’ve been enjoying Acustica Magenta for what you describe. Maybe a demo is in order?

Fabfilter is my recommendation Cheers Wiz My go-to as well but he said he’s not interested in “linear” for this and wants colorful vibe plugs, which FF of course isn’t. Still, I can’t get enough FF. I use hardware for the heavy lifting and lots of FF for the ITB sculpting. Amazingly intuitive and well thought out stuff.

I was thinking that if you set the Q and frequency points to what there are in whatever vintage EQ you are coveting...then there is only really saturation to deal with.... cheers Wiz

EQuilibrium and TDR Slick EQ M for clean, TDR Slick EQ for dirty (you can adjust the amount and type of dirt, but TBH I rarely use any as I have the analogue chain for adding 'vibe'). Never felt I needed anything else.

ok thanks all.
magenta is on my radar so i will try the demo. i think pink might be a must have also.
fabfilter is too clean. it is very good but i'm looking for coloured pens.
tdr slick eq is what i was referring to as vos eq. so that's my clean currently. i do like it very much. if it had another band it would be even better.
so looking for slightly warmer than slickeq.

thinking a little more.
warmer and or punchier than slickeq.
and as ragan says suitable for heavy lifting.

great call superwack,
i'll have to check them both out. the boz hoser really resonates with me.
the e27 i will put directly up against the waves api eq.
keen for more suggestions.

Have you demoed Kush and what about that Russian guy who does sta? I remember they had something I think called Grntleman’s eq, which was multiple eq’s in one plug, the British was very colourful !

Do you use UAD stuff? I love what the Curve Bender does. You can crank stuff on it and it never sounds wrong.

It is not what you asked for but maybe you like my opinion. I tend to use the stock EQs in Logic. If I want artifacts I send the file into real gear and back to the DAW.

I like the E27, but don't like how the bands don't overlap. It has a 2x mode, which gives double the bands, but that feels clunky to me. Also, worth checking out is the IK560 plug.

I would check out Sonimus. The pro eq has been around a good while and they just released a new ssl inspired one. They both have drive knobs on board for nice saturation.

I like the PSP E27 a lot, the Maag EQ4 can do a lot with just a few adjustments. I also like the UAD Helios EQ on guitars in particular. UAD API 560 as well. Between those and the FabFilter I don’t usually need to try anything else. Occasionally the UAD Pultec MEQ or EQP. I really like the MEQ when I have too much 200-500Hz in particular. Sometimes the boost sound really good as well. I like to try the EQP when I need some 8-16K boost and the sub lows can work well too.
You might also want to demo the Waves RS56, Kush Electra, SoundToys Sie-Q, and Softube Brillance Pack.

I like the E27. It's colored like you're looking for gouge, but it IS heavy handed. Barely cracked out of detent is when I often end up. It's got "too much" of a good thing for me. I find myself using it less and less as time moves on.....

Just a side note but I'll bring it up I once got kicked out of a clinic for asking how often do we reach for the EQ for bad things it does to the single rather than simple freq boost and cut ?

I really love the Sie-Q for a little something. And the Maag is always magic dust.

I like the Elysia Museq in "warm" mode for low and mid boosts, Maag for the highs.
The layout on the Museq is intuitive and more full-featured than the other plugs I have (550/560, various pultec emulations, 1073-style etc.), and though it's not super clean I wouldn't call it insanely colored either. This plus the wide Q allows for larger adjustments.

Just to bring up one that hasn't been mentioned, waves rs56 is great. I prefer it to the soundtoys sie q. Very sweet sounding eq. Gentle, broad curves with fixed eq points. Based on a passive circuit. Does ms.
Me likey
Edit
Sean beat me to it.

UAD Pultec, Curve Bender, Massive Passive, Sie-Q and DMG Sontec curves.
I'd say the UAD/Softube Curve Bender fits the bill as far as being both warm and punchy.

My favorites are FabFilter for surgical general eq and Softube TubeTech for broad stroke coloration.

And for real punchy colored eq, I gotta say that API 550a hardware will change your life. No plugin can do what that little guy can do.

I find myself using it less and less as time moves on..... the e27 does sound good in the demos, the top end sounds exaggerated but not crispy. i think you can also hear that it is pretty heavy handed. my gut feel is the AA pink will be where i end up. my gut feel is the AA pink may be the answer for that sound.
