B C A for me. I wish the vocals weren't so buried once she starts getting on it. Are we shooting out horn blasts or the vocal mic? That's the spot where the rubber meets the road. The super soft stuff is where you can get a lesser mic to sound really similar to something great like a 67 (sometimes). When a vocalist really lays into it is where a great mic will stand up tall. As soon as that part hits in this video, the vocals are kind of masked by everything else. Still, I was able to come up with a preference and this is definitely better than hearing nothin'.

Joshua, I think it's time for the reveal. As Michael Jackson said, A,B,C ? it's easy as 1,2,3

I would love to get a hold of one of these and bring it to jeremygillespie’s place and hear it next to his U67 while singing a few different styles. If it can handle my warm voice singing at 110+db and still sound as close as this video does, then this is a real winner. I’m really not a fan of this woman’s voice in the context of a shoot out. She doesn’t have that next gear. Even when she lets rip it’s not a big sound. So it’s hard to hear how they all handle a big dynamic shift. In fact I really want to hear this on my wife’s voice. My voice really needs a top end boost on a U67 style mic. My wife’s voice sounds dynamite on them, although if it’s overly dark like the MK67 it too needs a bit of a boost as well.

It's not mutually exclusive that there's something SPECIAL about old mics....hell--old gear in general....AND...that's it's not remotely necessary to get good sounding recordings. I think you could inter splice bits from A B and C into one take and people wouldnt care. Now thats cool Cheers Wiz While it IS cool....I'd also point out that I promise, having done it, you can do the same thing with an Sm7. If you pay attention, I'm pretty sure you'll see it's not a novel practice to have an Sm7 sitting next to a U47 or even 251 that might get "weird" during some passages, and you can flip to the Sm7. No one knows it's done. And while on SOME level you can say "sure but why put up the expensive one if it's the same"--I didn't say it was 100% "the same"...I said you could swap between them on a per line basis in a vocal and no one would know. Anything GOOD....is close enough to comp in. IME.

Vincent, when I get my SA67, after a session at my place which I'll invite any RealGear friends to join me, if you still want to go to Jeremy's, I'll go with you. Assuming Jeremy has some time and we can coordinate traveling. It's quite a distance from NYC, so it's basically a day trip.
* I've done what Popmann mentions, and when I comped between 2 different mics, it sounded like I had just moved mic position a little, not like a different mic. One had a tube, and one was FET.

I listened again and man they are all really, really good. I could use any of them as my analytical side can't really spot better/worse differences. But my emotional side, .. starting around 1:20 I'm falling in love with this girl's voice. Feels like she's right next to me, like soul mate material. The mids are like a thick cream, kinda compressed and standing up tall, and her breath is hanging out there after fact, steady almost like a whisper. B and C I'm just not getting the love vibes.

On first listen, my tastes lined up exactly with yours, ragan. "A" sounded kind of pinched to me. As soon as it switched over to "B", I felt my body relax, like the whole mic breathed more. I thought once the full band kicked in, it wasn't worth trying to tell, as the vocal was so buried by the horns. On the second listen, I think I might have reversed my preference by exactly 180 degrees. What I initially perceived as "pinched" in mic A sounded more like natural tube compression upon second listen. I think mic B may have been a hair louder, which felt "exciting" on first listen. Or maybe the tube isn't compressing on it as much. So now I think my preference would be: A, C, B. But hey, no real sibilance on any of them, which was quite cool.

Yeah I did that thing. I recorded a track with my DIY 251 "Claire" microphone. One of the vocal sections needed to be re-done so I grabbed my SM57 with the Tab Funkenwerk T58 transformer and finished the track. They were basically indistinguishable in the sense of continuity. Sort of made me stop and think a little bit.

Yup, there are some comps on my first album between a U87ai and a KSM44. I don’t think anyone hears them if they don’t know where they are. Lol.

Oh ,.,,,. so a ball-peen hammer. Not just for SM7 tone improvement any more! Being an LDC guy I prefer the tone of a wooden mallet, more body and less of a metallic sound, a rubber mallet will get you in the ballpark but just lacks the resonance of wood😁
