I know some of you guys are in positions to try out and have a lot of knowledge of different monitors. So, I'm thinking of adding another pair to my desk. I currently use Mackie HR824MKII's and they're great. But, what I've noticed is that I might actually want a pair of monitors again (I once had PSI's) that will reveal little issues that might escape my ears from the 824's. Or, I'd like a set that are extremely similar to car speakers, you know how you jump in the car and you are pissed because something didn't sound exactly the same. I don't know if the extremely detailed type of monitor is that as well, but I'm looking to do a purchase after I do a full label album starting tomorrow. I want to try and get the purchase in before the end of the year, taxes etc.
Here's the deal, I'm looking for the sleeper, the one that doesn't get much attention but should. I have to devote a good portion of my income to my family so when I make a purchase I have to make sure I keep it inexpensive and also hit a home run. Those shouldn't go together in our world I know, but, I've picked up some mighty good gear I use every day (DIYRE Pultecs hardwired into my mixbuss for a total of $500.) So, I know there must be some out there that are under the major radar that can do what I want. If any of you fellas know of such, please let me know, or if you don't want the secret getting out shoot me a PM, but I do need to make this addition because my mixing workload is getting more and more, so I need to be able to move quickly through projects and not be having to listen in the car and crap like that, I hate having to do that. I had NS10's but they truly were doing me no good anymore, things have changed so much in the last 10 years that the space for them just isn't worth it anymore, so I did sell them.
I don't need anything big, something small would be just fine, even 4" woofers because I have L/R subs. I just want something that will reveal a lot and not have to take away from my family in order to buy them. So, fire away or shoot me a PM.
Thanks guys!
Jerome

What about a used pair of One15's? I bet you could score a good deal. You could pick up an Adcom amp and get it modded (or mod it yourself).

I love my APS Aeons. My room is professionally designed/treated, and I got the last 5% of performance out of Sonaworks room correction software. The smaller Klassiks are every bit as good, according to reports.

Watch the Wohler broadcast monitors and get a cheap one. 1RU powered monitor, best 'auratone' option for car or TV, and probably under the cost of a single auratone. Bonus phase meter and multiple inputs.

I'm looking at those new Focal Shape monitors. I was told by a pretty big mixing engineer friend of mine this morning to look into them, passive radiator, highly detailed according to the specs, and they look great, price is very attractive.

A guy down the street has a pair of those, I listened to them once and really didn't like them honestly. He's always coming down to my place to check his low-end and reverb tails..... The reverb tails are exactly the type of thing I'm wanting to be able to hear clearly. Maybe it's his room, not sure, but still, there was something I just didn't dig about those monitors.

I’m a huge fan of the Eve monitors. Very high quality and trustworthy. They’re fun to work on as well.

If you could convince the guy to ship them there is a lovely pair of Quested 2205's on evil bay, if it wasn't the holidays I would be trying to find a way to grab them!

Hey jeromemason, how do you like the 824II? Do you know what are the differences between the mk1 nd mk2?

What about a used pair GENELEC 8040. I think you cant go worng with them... I had diffrent monitors here for two weeks (Coxail Monitors) in the end I still liked the 8040 with all its desgin flaws. www.ebay.com/itm/Genelec-8040A-Bi-amplified-Studio-Monitors-Pair/132422126938?epid=1001809434&hash=item1ed4f94d5a:g:JHUAAOSwvTpaJKxy

Hey jeromemason, how do you like the 824II? Do you know what are the differences between the mk1 nd mk2? They're great, I mix on them every day and they translate really well. They just don't expose some of the little things that I need to start hearing. But, for getting a mix to 95%, they're awesome. The low-end extension on them is really great as well, very accurate in the bottom end. They only difference I hear really, is the top-end isn't quite as harsh and they have a bit more punch to me. They look damn great though, piano gloss black.... Much needed face lift. But, I got no problems mixing on the mkI's either, both have the passive radiator, helps nail down the low mids and transients. I'm a sealed box guy, or passive radiator is fine too. The thing is that I ended up getting my pair in a pawn shop down in Destin FL, where I'm from. They didn't know what they had and sold me the pair in the original boxes, brand new for $650.

I'm definitely going to go the Focal Shape 50 route. Warren over Zen Pro told me they're extremely detailed and excellent in the low mids. So, that'll be my route as soon as I get this current album done. I may also grab one of those Antelope Discrete 8's as well. That's one hell of a box from what I've read. Use the 8 DO's to my summing and the glory of Antelope monitoring D/A. Plus I get 8 discrete pre's along with all those plugins, and the mic system that's kind of like Slate's, although I'd have to grab the mic, but one day I'd for sure do that. I'm going to try and get those purchases done in the next month..... gotta get some write offs.

I have said it before, I have a love hate relationship with Focal. I am always impressed by the CMS series, then I hear the BE's , LOVE that highend, the mids and lows just seam SSSLLLOOWW next to that Be inverted Dome ! Switch back to the lowered models yeah great intergrated sound but I want that speed and extension!

I still love my JBL lsr monitor system. They seem to be passe' these days but I've been getting great translation from them. The big 3 way LSR's are something very special, the various 2 ways are fairly consistent thanks to all the DSP they are using they don't wow but you can't go wrong with them!

I've done a fair amount of work on LSR6328s with an LSR6312 sub, pretty solid combo. Not for everybody though, I've been in the studio (a professionally designed, treated, purpose built control room) with experienced people who found them hard to judge.
