Last time I croresponded with Colin, I suggested exactly this - a 1073 pre without the EQ. He mentioned that due to loading of the circuitry, it wouldn't sound the same, and at that point, he didn't seem keen on doing it..... Maybe competition from others forced it? At any rate, great price, and I'm sure it will sound good.

It’s much cheaper in total than the Don Classics and even the Soundskulptor. I am actually very skeptic about this. It’s possible that’s it’s more of an inspired by the 1073 (like the GAP73) rather a true and accurate clone.

Fastest shipping ever with these kits. These trimmed resistor leads are killing me though, I can't flip it over without spilling them back out and they are too short to bend. What's the secret to soldering these little f'ers?
I feel like I'd be done with one by now if I didn't have to keep searching for one that dropped out when trying to solder it

Fastest shipping ever with these kits. These trimmed resistor leads are killing me though, I can't flip it over without spilling them back out and they are too short to bend. Yeah that would save time I think i just need to be patient. But doing two at a time is sure trying. 3 hours in, got half the resistors done. 1.5 each you could say. Time for bed!

whenever I built colin's kits, I always soldered resistors, etc on the side they were installed on. other components with longer leads, I could bend the leads to hold them in place and would then flip the board over. the solder bead would always flow thru to the opposite side of the PCB. I never ran into any problems soldering that way (same side as the component)

My impression right now, is this build is a monster, and may be worth the 90 pounds to get it built for me 4.5 hours into the pair - i'm on the capacitors I would also recommend the CAPI 500 series extension rig - you're gonna be calibratin' by the time the night is through!

I need some help. I was struggling to get the molex connector to fit into the pins on the circuit board. There was something wrong with it so I hard to force it down into position.
Now when I connect a power source I’m getting 26.8 mV when I put probes on the TP1 and TP2 test points. Turning the bias adjuster has no effect on this. So I am unable to get it up to 90 mV as required in the build doc. What’s the next trouble shooting step?

Shipping to the East coast US was amazing - almost overnight. But during assembly you have to have some electric tape handy and tape 'em down as you go. That REALLY drove me bonkers doing the 1081 kits. I really enjoy trimming component leads myself, then I can stuff the board and only commit to soldering once I'm sure everything is in the appropriate place. Instead I found myself either taping them down or soldering every component individually as I went along. Either way it was slow going. Gotta say that I was NOT unhappy at the end of the process though; they sound fantastic!

I was expecting that trim screw to be a pain, but I can use my thumb nail easily enough! Better or not is in the ear of the beholder. Bottom line - it won't sound as much like a 1073 as a 1073 with an EQ - which is exactly what a real 1073 IS.
