In my mind, the Coles 4038 is the "U47 of ribbon mics" it just seems like the best one. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong. There’s many great ribbon mics... on drums the Coles are legendary for a reason. “That” particular Sound on drums Is something I searched for and only found with the Coles. My AEA’s Sound Great, but the 4038 is king on drums for me. Many others seem to be diggin the Stager and Samar ribbon mics on drums as well - I haven’t had a chance to try those.

I have a pair of 4038's and a pair of sr1a's. The FIRST time I put a 4038 over a drum kit my I got very happy inside... and they always seem to fill me with happiness. I totally understand Daniel lanois's urge to make an entire album with only them and 57's. Great contrast there too. The only other ribbon I use on oh's that comes close is an sf12. I have a feeling the r84/88 would be very similar but I haven't tried mine yet there (Note to self). i did not have that experience with he stagers on oh's yet. The stagers are much brighter than the coles and don't give you that chocolate pillow sound. The stagers are wonderful, not as thick in the top end as the 4038's. This is a pro or a con depending on application clearly.. More highend detail, openness going on. Very very detailed.. Loving them on electric and acoustic so far. Can't wait to do a vocal with them as well. The Cole's 4038's definitely have a special place in my heart. Will never let them go.

A 4038 on vocal duties complete with that overdriven distortion you hear on so many 60's recordings.
These guys, 'The Teskey Brothers' are locals about an hour up the road from me in the Yarra Valley.
Stax Records reborn!

But they are definitely not 4038’s. I’ve also tried them as overheads. They sound real good, but for my taste, the Coles are in their own league as overheads.

I sometimes enjoy that mic and sometimes it sounds a little flat or uninteresting in the mids mostly. It can be real nice. I've used it on OH and drum room and a few mono mic setups - let me tell you, it's very different to a Coles. The Coles is the only thing that can get "that" sound. That's why I didn't waste anytime with anything else and went straight for it. I'll be getting another. It made me smile as soon as I heard the playback the first time on my kit. It does it's thing pretty effortlessly. The r84 is still sweet for an even softer sound IMO. I have a very hard time getting drums to punch through a mix with it, though.
