Been doing research on this desk for awhile now and, It seems the sound of it was not what a lot of the Neve crowd was into, can anyone here expand on this from their actual experience with it?

I think it was designed to be more linear than say an 8028...so I would imagine if you are looking for that sound, the 5088 wasn’t it. But my understanding is that it’s a pretty incredible console.

Yeah John pretty much nailed it, people wanted a vintage sound where as Rupert gave them a great modern sounding console! The internet has this funny way of setting up those who prefer to be guided by hope rather than history, those who know the Focusrite and 9098 where not surprised!

That plus not being "in-line".
Eric - with all due respect - it's nowhere near a 9098 IMO.

The desk can be harmonic if you want it to be, I think people are blowing smoke about it. The thing has headroom and wide as a truck at the mix buss. If an engineer can't make it sound dope with that, they probably suck at it anyway,

Would the initial complaints have led RND to release the Shelford edition ?

RND is today's Neve. It isn't yesterday's Neve.
Folks need to accept that and get over any hangups. Rupert Neve is not the kind that rests on past glories. Would that there were more like him.

Gotta remember his first consoles are tube, I had one around for awhile to reverse engineer the circuits, heard it a little. Cool, and clearly not like anything that came later. You can see what it looked like on Rupert's site a bit before I had it around. Someone before me threw out the external case and pulled/replaced the later meters and oscillator. The pics of this console that were out there seem gone now, I don't find any others like I used to.

Yeah just more 9098 than it is the old stuff, of course part of the 9098 sound is that you have a full console module vs 5088 is sort of build it how you want. I guess what I was trying to say is people wanted it to be old classic Neve sound and forgot the progression particularly the latest consoles.

I've always wondered why people want these remakes of gear that's old.... I mean of course stand on the shoulders of giants, but with all the new technology we have we can make things so much better if we'd just let these guys do it without crying it's not to vintage spec.

Well, that's the magic of audio. There's not a single definition of "better"

What new consoles compete with new Neve, SSL, API? I'd love to have one of these consoles just so everything that I reach for most-faders, preamp gain, eq, bus routing, send routing, cue mixes etc.- is all in one space. Of course, I can't afford it. So, I make due. However, I'd love to own one.

Maybe what I said was mis interpreted..... I was speaking in general that everyone wants these gear devs to make gear to the exact spec of the old stuff. I love the sound of the old stuff, but there are ways these guys could go about building great gear by using new technology to bring down the cost and to sound just a good if not better. Like Heritage with the Elite series stuff. Using new techniques and technologies to bring down cost but still getting great sounding gear.

One of my friends whose ears I respect - thinks it’s sterile and boring. The Portico units can be setup just about anyway you want them. Clean and Clear Transparency, or Warm Music Glue. They don't sound like Vintage Neve's, but they easily have some of the essence when you crank the gain knobs around to find your sources sweetest spot. I don't know if I would agree that RND gear is boring, its definitly unique and interesting if you dig into it. There are a lot of those units I really like. For instance the Portico II Channel Strip has magical EQ sound when you crank the knobs. Its a little past something like the 5033, but the 5033 is a really great tool to have around [as far as equalizers go]. Regarding the 5088 and [subsequently 5060 and 5059 summing mixers] its simply a matter how how the record is produced on one, if it aims to be more in the warmer vintage categoery or the newer modern category. Its certainly true the transformers sound different, but they are colored sounding to my ears.

One of my friends whose ears I respect - thinks it’s sterile and boring. I think the Portico stuff sounds great.... It's not going to be like the original Neve amp stuff. It's kind of got it's own thing. When they first came out with the Portico's there were a lot of guys putting the 5012's on their mix buss. I remember back then one guy had just gotten one of the 5012's and wired it into his mix buss, when he hit play he nearly went through the roof shouting "that's sound I've been after for years!" So, I think the Portico's are excellent boxes, it's just the market has become so saturated with the Neve blueprint some folks want them to sound like the old Neve stuff, which they just were not designed to do.

Hey Klauth, have you looked into Paul Wolff's new FIX console? Its an interesting concept that you can fill full of your 500 series goodies. Hey Jeff has anybody seen anything besides the small demo frame? I know when I talked to him a couple of years ago the Idea was to use The monitor controller he designed for slate as the master section, I don't think that has even hit the street! The 2 problems with a 500 series console is everybody wants a modular customized for their needs but can't except the fact that very fact makes it expensive!! They also can't fathom the sheer size because they think 500 tiny !

The few pieces from RND that I have heard and used have all been really lame. That includes the console. A studio here in town has one. It is really boring and nothing great about it. The Shelford stuff does seem to be interesting however.

I’ve been watching the FIX thing for awhile now, seems abit overkill for my world. Although Paul’s gear is always wonderful. Heiders are killing it Jeff! Will get some more in the not too distant future.
