....and the artist likes the DPA best on her acoustic today..... It sounds good, I might vote for the MKH406 on some songs, more bass (proximity effect) and more focused, with the 4060 omni having more room to it. There was also a stereo K47H crossed pair 32" back from this. The KM140 came in decidedly last in this situation. I'll probably keep tracking with all 3 over the next session to gather more comparisons. Love those Rycote shocks and dual clips. Same choices here: abigaildowd.bandcamp.com/track/isle-on-the-water

In the old days they were pretty much made to order. So find the place where vidiots shop down under or go to the Rycote website or my old employer Full Compass should have the entire line on their site or Give JK a shout, because you do need theses!

The pair of clips holding the top mic are also Rycote, I think they're $19 or so, B&H, Full Compass, etc should all have them. There are a coupla Rycote parts the German Oktava site has at better deals than I can get in the US, even with international shipping.

I've had a matched pair of KM140s for 25 years or so. I can see why you wouldn't use them in close for guitar or other spot work--in those cases you're usually looking for the right character to enhance or suppress aspects of whatever you're mic'ing. Where the 140 shines is at the mid distance, picking up all of an ensemble. It's got just enough lift to counter air absorption. Its off-axis frequency response is also excellent, so it's a good choice for X/Y or ORTF setups. I also use one of them as a mid mic in M/S situations. Another nice feature is the fact that you can remote the capsules from the mic body by ten feet or so. Really helpful when you want the mic to be more unobtrusive. The only similar way to do that that I know of nowadays is the little Schoeps extension stand, which costs about as much as the mic.
Most of these applications aren't typical for the majority of folks on RGO, so the mic might sound a little too neutral. But it's really a nice mic in the right application.

I've never liked them close on steel string guitar, and I gave up fighting them as drum OH's too. I do like them at mid distances as you say, where the diffuse field boost acts appropriately. On the particular acoustic guitar in the first post, it did have a winning 300-1K quality, but the top and bottom more than subtracted against it.

Had her back for more work, added an MKH105 omni to that array, and an MKH800T / MKH30 MS set in line with the K47H pair. 9 channels for one acoustic(?!). The new winners are....the added mics. I erased the K47H tracks after hearing the 800/30 in comparison, which is also now the main sound. The 105 is -6dB relative to the 800/30, and there's -16dB of 406 in there too. The DPA was runner up for the close mic, but has a more pronounced tinny sounding treble than the 105, otherwise indistinguishable. So it's turned off, will keep tracking it since it was the previous album sound. 406 has a bit of upper edge definition the 105 lacks, but much less than the KM140 or 4060, so it complements better. The KM140 won't be tracked going forward. It was actually shocking how much closer the 800/30 set sounded than the K47H set, with more of the sort of discrimination/rejection of unwanted sounds the ear provides versus the typical mic, if that makes any sense. I am attributing that to superior pattern control, part of which is MDC versus LDC in the bass. Even though bass is flat all the way down with the MKH, the room and street rumble is more easily controlled, which is a factor given how quietly she plays. The MKH are extremely sensitive and quiet too, in comparison to the K47H. I get the thing some people say about the current MKH sound, or lack thereof, they are the cleanest/quietest thing I've ever owned, for better or worse. They are accurate and unforgiving, revealing all that's wrong with a source. I'm putting them through Gates SA-70's, which gives some nice harmonic excitement and thickness.

The original model number was BS-36 as in "boom stand" before they started marketing them in music stores.
