Personally, I’m not a fan of front ports or ribbon tweeters. I’ve tried multiple manufacturers with that setup and the low end always seems to be mush and the top never translates well for me.

Don't call those quasi ribbon AMT's ribbons! Real ribbons are some of the most magical HF drivers in the world. The problem with real ribbons is they are expensive and delicate, plus to achieve high power and SPL with most small format means multiple drivers.

I have used the HEDD type07 and I really enjoying doing work with them. They sound very tight in the low end. Super Punchy monitors for their size. Great low end sound. Nice power. Fantastic separation to elements. I like these Tweeters A LOT better than the ADAM design. To my ears, they are less fatiguing and more soft sounding than the ADAM tweeter. I have not tried out the new HEDD Linearizer plug in, but that really interests me, since I had a great experience using the Type07. Actually out of all the other HEDD monitors, The 07's were my favorites so far. To be honest, though to be fair, I do really like working on small speakers. Everything I did on these translated really amazingly. They are dry and fast. But you cannot hear the cab, very acoustically quiet cabs. If I had not decided to purchase the Focal Shape 50, I would have purchased these. The price is amazing for what you get. Hope this helps out,

Time to upgrade the monitors! I've heard great thing about the Hedd 07's. Anyone have any experiences with them? I think they’re a bit more money than the Hedd’s but if it’s in budget, check out the new Dynaudio LYD 48 3-ways. I and some of the other early adopters have been really impressed with them.

If I were going for that style and in that price range the Unity Rocks are on my next buy list for monitors. Sealed cabinet, flat and plenty of juice.
I don't know though, my Mackie HR824 MKII's have been so solid it's hard for me to spend money on monitoring. I've never been a fan of fully ported speakers, only when I really had to. I like either a sealed cabinet or the passive radiator design, let's you hear what's happening with the snare and the bucket of the voice. I run two subs under them just barely there to give me the lowest octaves, my translation is great. I had some PSI A17m's at one point, expensive and complicated, and I just couldn't mix on them, I heard too damn much that would never be present through apple earbuds. Proac's were great but I couldn't stand the damn air hitting my face from those front ports, but still a great monitor. Whatever works for you in monitoring is the way to go. I really try not to debate anyone on monitoring because people hear things differently and react differently. Monitoring is crucial to test drive before you commit. Whatever let's you make moves with confidence, that's the monitor for you.
With that said, I would gladly trade my Mackie's for the Unity Rocks..... Those are extremely impressive monitors.

I (and @shadowamd ) share some thoughts in this thread starting on this page. realgearonline.com/thread/7324/new-monitors?page=3Edit: and follow @shadowamd's GS link to read his full thoughts. He did some really extensive testing/comparing before settling on them. Lots of great insight in that GS thread.

Jerome you might want to try some PMCs the transmission line bass loading, but they are pricy. A Ton of ported monitors aimed at the home studio are ported and EQed to look good on spec sheets and impress in the demo room rather than to live with.

Jerome you might want to try some PMCs the transmission line bass loading, but they are pricy. A Ton of ported monitors aimed at the home studio are ported and EQed to look good on spec sheets and impress in the demo room rather than to live with. I came really close to going with two two's over the PSI's but, PSI's claim that those speakers even while ported still had the transient response of a sealed cabinet sold me. Don't get me wrong, they were incredibly detailed, you could hear every little thing happening but it drove me nuts. At the end of the day I finally decided that I was a meat and potatoes guy, it works the best for me. I move fast when I mix and having ultra technical monitors was slowing me down, causing me to over think my mixes and ended up being counter productive. A monitor like the Unity Rocks, sealed cab, just kind of giving you the overall picture but portraying the transients accurately. That's what I look for in monitoring. Its why a lot of cats here in town use the Mackie HR824's, some use the MKIIs some use the very first generation. It's similar to a sealed cab but has a nice lowend. The top can be a little over hyped but most of what people listen to music on does the same thing. Earbuds usually distort the hi-end, respond well to accurate transients, especially in snares and toms so I think that's why a lot of guys still use those speakers. I'm just not a fancy monitor guy, even if I had a pile of spare cash laying around I'd take my family to Costa Maya for two weeks rather than buy ATC's or PMC's. But, that's just me. Like I said, monitoring is as personal as finding your soul mate, different strokes for different folks and nobody is wrong or right in defending their choice because it's theres. Just my opinion on the whole monitor debate.
