I'm sure there a several great ones, I have a pair of the Avedis e27s and I am very happy. I also do mostly acoustic and vocal type stuff.

I got the BT50's to work for me today on a very delicately picked steel string guitar melody in a space open piece. VICTORY!!! Sounded awesome. Didn't even bother to try the 550A's. Not that this will happen again for me anytime soon.... LOL

Sounds like drbill needs a 550A beside his BT50's and 550A-1's for comparison. Does drbill have an LC53A, since he named it?

Sounds like drbill needs a 550A beside his BT50's and 550A-1's for comparison. Does drbill have an LC53A, since he named it? More, more, moreeee, MORE EQ's!!!! Heh heh. Yeah, I should have some of those, but, unfortunately, nope, no LC53A's in the stable. I've always been happy with 550A's in the API consoles I've used, but maybe because I've been in other studio's (don't have a vintage 2488 of my own.... ) I've been lulled into THINKING I like 550A's, when all along, I prefer the A-1's - cause that's what I have at my studio. One thing I know for sure, I DO like 550A-1's. They almost always work. I'm not giving up on the BT50's yet though Jeff!!!! Maybe I'm just not on the right material for them. They do work for me sometimes, like I mentioned above. I've been amazed at some of the things I don't like that other people LOVE. So....all ears hear differently and use different tools to get to the finish line. One thing I have learned over the years, I do tend to pendulum swing from side to side in very slow movements. For instance, right now, I'm not using a console and LOVING IT!!! I tend to like to mix my gear and work flow up a bit. Maybe my warming trend on the BT50's will continue.....

I have 550s and have always really liked them. I bought them used in 1972 after using the ones normaled to the deMideo consoles at Heider's. I passed on a pair of EQP1as for the same price because I couldn't imagine ever working in a studio that didn't have Pultecs and the APIs had replaced the Motown graphics in my life. I think the new ones use Jensen transformers.
