Actually for what I got my 87ai for it’s worth it. Also looking at the innertube mod. I actually just found out about these mods browsing through here...wish I found this out a year ago. After reading through the threads on this mic, seems to be the closest thing to a 67 for little money if you compare what a real 67 goes for! Ragan - you have a max mod? Can you give me some info on it?

We discussed the Max Mod on this below thread I started a lot. There are some samples there too. realgearonline.com/thread/6267/u67-style-microphone?page=1I ended up picking it up. It's a really thick, warm, sound. I really like it for certain things. I haven't recorded anything with it I thought didn't work.

The various DIY options are more or less the same thing, though none are meant to retrofit a Neumann body. Max had a DIY version that Chunger carried in his store (still listed), that is probably no longer available. You could buy some U87 metalwork and head connector, or maybe TLM67 metal and do a DIY retrofit, but IMO it will cost far more in $s and time than just buying complete from Max. Some reports of Max transformer being dark, others claiming no diff beside a real U67. I feel mine is dark, and the Neumann test jack connection on the PSU confirms this, along with comparison against spoken word samples I've heard from a very nice original U67. It does nonetheless sound very good to me and everything it does has been useful. I've seen another case of someone adding the test jack to the PSU, and theirs met Neumann spec. I've got a mod in progress that brings treble closer to the original I'm comparing against, though I don't feel I've arrived at a final position such as to recommend anything. I also have another output transformer on pre-order to potentially try, though I'm loathe to do the work to pull the installed transformer on speculation alone.

Go to GS and post "realgearonline" and see what happens. I think someone accused me of being petty about GS one time...

It's very worth getting a nice NOS EF86 in there, but I loved it with the NOS PF86 Max ships it with too. Takes EQ amazingly. I really find no fault with it.

Thanks Ragan I also did a DIY re-paint of the fugly TLM67/George Neumann head badge situation. realgearonline.com/post/123270/threadLots of discussion about it in general in that thread too.

I have read about the innertube 87 mod also somewhere on here...that GS thread is brutal to get through...if you want closer to U67 sounding go max mod, if you want hi-fi modern sounding go innertube? Where do I find this max mod purchase link? I emailed Max.

That's it. You just email Max. He will send you an invoice to pay to process your order.
