Is this thing worth a damn? Everyone spas the 103, but people seem pretty happy with the 102. A pair of 102's can be had for about $1000 and would put that Neumann badge in my mic locker. Having a pair would give flexibility for overheads.
I could see general use on vocals, horns, and overheads.
Would a pair of 414's be a better bet? More patterns, but doesn't have the N badge. I've used 414's before and they always seem fine, never great.
Am I better off just spending $2500ish on a single 87?

The gas is strong with this one...
Not judging...Glass houses and all. (I've been thinking about a Slate VMS...seriously...somebody stop me.)

I had one for a while. I wouldn't call it a character mike but found it had a natural and linear sound: certainly useful.

They're pretty cool little (and I do mean little) mics. Extremely clean and super airy but in a pleasant musical way. Not harsh. Kind of a unique sound. I see them all the time for $450 (that's what I sold mine for). Occasionally $400. $1k for a pair is high to me. If you want the Neumann name on your mic locker and don't wanna shell out for a U87 or something, I'd say go for it. If you want workhorse, regardless of badge, I'd take a pair of 3U MKID's over 102s every day of the week and twice on Sunday. I'd also much rather have a pair of 414b-ULS (still regret selling mine).

If you are going for the N badge go all the way, 87i/67/47. You had a 3U at one point? I might look for a MG UM70.

I have a pair of 102s. Good mics, flat with no upper-mid hype and transparent, as has been mentioned. I like mine a lot; the price I paid was average (about $950 for both, but bought separately).
I don't see where you could go wrong with either 102s or C414s. I'd like to have a pair of 414s too.

U89's are occasionally obscenely cheap used.

Not bad, would rather a pair of 414 or Gefell UM70's and that just it , if I tied the up money in these , I couldn't reach for mics I'd really enjoy rather than mics that would get by.

I have one. Works well on some things but it's so small you won't really see the badge ... You'll have to leave the box conspicuously out for the client to trip over :-D

Lil small thing so cute ..cool but boring and doesn’t have the Neumann signature mic sauce to me.. What is wrong with the 103? People putting it in front of everybody and everything like an 87 and then being disappointed? Then run online to say it is trash...
103 are very popular as are Tlm 49... I would go for this order max mod/ 87/ 89, then tlm 49, Then tlm 107, tlm 103, tlm 102
