I have 2 vp28s and 4 vp25s now . Looking for a 500 series compressor for drums and possible vocal duties . I haven't seen a lot of opinions about the FC526 ? I'm looking at the splice -hairball or the FC526 . Opinions of any would be great Thanks

My so far limited experience with the FC526 mkI is it's pretty transparent compared to all the 1176/1178's I've driven. Far cleaner than my Distressors. It does what it's supposed to do. Like an 1176, it's fast, even at slowest attack. dandeurloo can confirm or deny.

The Splice is my favorite 500 series compressor by far.

Really? Everywhere I go (except here perhaps) the splice - 500 or 19" seems to be the #1 1176 clone out there. It certainly is for me.

Chunger on groupdiy used to do the awesome build pictorials. He took forever to do the fc526 when it first came out and that slowed my roll. I’m still sitting on two unbuilt kits from the original run. Biggest concern is the calibration

Calibration bit me, I was doing so in a non-standard rack which had a voltage offset that blew everything out of scale. No problems with other modules in that rack. I rewired the rack to conform to standard, but it was a bitch to discover. Now that we're on to mkII, the ground rules have changed on the build. Who knows.

I just paid someone to build it. Vióla. Still about $400 cheaper than some other offerings.
Plus...Jeff’s coming out with a pre-built line (don’t think that’s a secret)...not sure if the 526 will be one though.

For vocal duties, Inward Connections The Brute is probably the best 500 series comp I've used.

What's the difference between the MK1 and MK2 versions?
The Splices have just been KILLING it for me, but I'm always open to new comps. LOL
For super clean, super transparent tracking comps, I've always used the Aphex 661/651's. For similar with a bit more weight or color, LA2a's.

Cleanest comps I have, at any ratio, are the Foote Control Systems products. They are not like 1176's or FC526's.

How does the new 526 with transformer sound compared to the older ones which only had opamps? The older opamp only version is no longer offered, correct?

I just pulled the trigger on a pair of the FC526-XFMR...hear guys are even mastering with these. Rivals with the likes of Shadow Hills mastering comp.

I just finished building 2 FC526-XFMRs w/ 1731s. I haven't been able to put them through their paces yet but upon first listen and playing around with the settings - they sound fantastic - clean - fast - crisp - and then the ABI mode turns it into a crazy distortion machine, fantastic!

They are really good, but man trying to master with them sounds like a nightmare. The gain controls are very tweaky, you'd have to switch to alignment tones all the time. I couldn't deal with lack of link either.
