In a harder rock song I did it like CLA in one of his Videos. I EQed the hell out of the top end into the compressor on guitars. The compressor puts it down and I get the impression - wow top end but no harsheness.
How is that possible? I raised the top end by 8 db and it sounds smooth becasue the compressor takes away level?
Does not make ssense to me.
Anyone of the pros knows the reason wh it sounds open and smooth instead of harsh?

Compressors have tone. So, my guess is that the dark tone of the compressor is suppressing the top boost. Is the compresor an LA2A type?

Everything we like about boosted high end is in the sustains....largely we think is "harsh" is in the HF content of the attack.

Usually transformers (saturation) along with any limiting will knock the sharp edges off. Harmonics, distortion is distorted which means it's not going to sound exactly the same on the other side. Same thing is happening on the bottom it's just less obvious.

What aren't you getting? Guitars will have various 'pokey' frequencies through the highs, putting a high boost on them will make the compressor grab them dynamically as they 'poke' out. So you get better presence without the annoying stuff sticking out that makes you want to back the fader back down.

Everday I learn something even after 12 years doing it. Your answers make a lot of sense... It was not easy to do for me I guess a pro knows what he is doing. And harder guitar rock is normaly not my music, so I am not working much inuitive on it. To answer the question by swurveman . I did use the new Slate FG Stress for the task and it did it very very well. Pressing the top end down in nuke mode.....sounds very close to some famous records which I use in magic AB.

If you used distressor'ish on nuke then all you were doing was clamping anything that spiked above the nuke threshold. Guitars like you're talking about are dominant from 180 - 10k. Just a note on doing what you're doing to achieve that, just watch your HPF and make sure you're rolling to the lowest root for the guitar so you don't pump the compressor.
You can probably surprise yourself some by using a really wide Q on something like Fab ProQ and the pivot being 4k. drop that a couple db and it will let you push the meat of the guitar higher.
Try an la-3a type comp with that top pulled a little like that, hit it maybe knocking 1-2db off, see if you like that sound as well. Don't forget to HPF first though.

J I already did something like you advise me here. I will try the next days to follow your guideline more precise and see if it helps. LA3A stile plug in - any hint because I dont have the one by UAD.

Not so much the compression you're after with that style of comp but more of the front and backend of it's amps. Try notching up the output quite a bit and attenuating with something transparent and simple behind it. Maybe try the waves one I guess? The CLA version maybe?
