You may recall my thread earlier in the summer about frustrations playing to click ?
Perhaps someone mentioned Logic's beatmapping but it didn't register.
It analyzes an analogue track, like acoustic guitar and follows the natural cadence but still creates a beat map that you can synch drummer too etc.
You can set it to analyze by bar or for different note duration.
Seems to work great and its not completely rigid time as it is following your playing.

It works on midi tracks too. When I write string arrangements I usually get a rough mix of the song. When it's done without click I check the approx tempo at the start of the song, place the audio region of the rough mix so the 1st beat line up with 1st beat of a bar in logic, then record a midi track by playing 4ths or 8ths along with the rough mix and let beat mapping analyze the tempo. This way when the arrangement is done in Logic and artist/producer has approved, exporting a midi file makes an easy transition to Sibelius or any other score app.

do you use the bpm plug to approximate tempo at first ? didn't know there was one, thx for the tip! no, i just use the metronome on my iphone. has a tap function. doesn't need to be super accurate, it's just to avoid very drastic tempo changes at the start of the mapping. and provides a good count off if you need one
