True, but some people value that opinion, and I'm trying to help. Jesse's helped me out before.
You should try one first before diminishing the idea. I did say I was surprised, the KM84 was my holy grail SDC. I love them and they're all over my upcoming album. So, I'm not coming from nowhere with my suggestion. I attended a shootout in a nice studio where twenty pros blindly picked the Soyuz over a Neumann, everyone, no exceptions. Just passing it on.. I have no dog in the race, though I have been accused of colluding ;-)

If you're having other engineers use the studio (which would probably be a good bet financially as you're working evenings / weekends), NAME brand mics are very important - no matter what is "better" in anyone's opinion. If I put up a mic, I want to know what it sounds like, and have a good experience with it over the years. I'm not into experimenting with various and sundry mics at a rented studio when I'm on a clients clock. No one I know is going to hands down trust a brand they've never heard of over an industry standard that's eclipsed 30+ years of killer sound. (U87, KM84) They are time tested, fantastic and most importantly a known entity. Doesn't matter if the Soyuz is better. (Which IMO too is also just an opinion.) If you're fooling around on your own dime, in your own home studio, then that's a different story. Soyuz is not known well enough to be an industry standard yet. Maybe in another decade or two....
As far as KM's go...if you can find 86's, they are worth the extra $$.

I agree Bill, that's why I recommended a U87 or Max Mod 67 to Jesse first. And you're right about the Soyuz too, in a studio situation where you have outside clients, a KM84 is a known entity and a valuable selling point.
But I'm still not comfortable with people saying things like "JUST an opinion". I feel it diminishes us all. One could say almost everything you say is "just an opinion", and often be right. That doesn't take into account your years of experience, expertise and talent. I've never used a KM86. I see it has two capsules, I assume for figure 8 recording. I also assume it can do cardioid. So is it therefore much like an 84, but with more options?

So is it therefore much like an 84, but with more options? Yep, I also mentioned it on the previous page.. Although I wouldn't just go buy a huge range of Neumann's just because they're the most requested, there are better mic's for me all over the spectrum that I prefer to use.. If they didn't ask I used whatever I thought would work best. So it's more about select choices, I had / have some Neumann's (87 / 67 / M149 / 127) Schopes (MK21 / 41) Royer (R-121) and of course your standard Shure mic's, SM7B was probably the most highly requested (rock and metal of course) even if it is my least preferred mic. After the "party" pieces I used stuff like the Mojave 201 FET on a lot of singers as an alternative to the SM7B and it was so much better. Also if they get damaged (more like when for a few) I didn't have to sulk about it for a day or two. The 67 / M149 would only see the light of day if I was using it or if I recorded a band I knew / trusted, I did have one or two mics go missing although nothing expensive luckily..
