It seems to me that ebay's new global shipping function is much cheaper than when I hire a shipper myself. They also automatically charge you the duties and if pay with paypal. its' insurance etc. is still in effect.
It total it seems cheaper.

Cheaper maybe until they hit you with the selling fee- I’m done with fleabay after a recent sale and will only work on reverb as it takes about 6% vs ebays 11%.

I was speaking from the buyer perspective but it is certainly true that ebay used to a well valued placed and now asking prices are high.
But it is good to be aware of all fees that is for sure.

paypal is 3-4% charged automatically to the seller, if you use reverb and PP you are paying 7-8% ? Reverb gives you world wide exposure and PP gives you shipping and replacement insurance, but you need a tracking number.

Yeah but they also nail you with a Processing fee (2.5%)on top of the reverb selling fee; this is if you're a preferred seller though either way it's about 6% total IME. As for ebay yeah once paypal get it's slice too it's even worse... I do wish that reverb would implement customer optioned shipping methods however that would make things a little easier for all parties involved.

Gotcha. I tend to think of 'selling fees' separately than payment fees. eBay sellers fees are what now, 10%? Then PayPal is another 2.9%. Reverb selling fees are 3.5%, then PayPal adds their 2.9%. Reverb's Direct Checkout payment fees are a tiny bit less, 2.5-2.7%, depending on preferred seller status.
That about right?
Oh, and eBay sucks. I stopped selling there a while back. Only in case of emergency or some whacky tough sell will I ever list on eBay again. I mean, the process isn't bad, and the audience is huge. But man, they rape you with the fees.

Danger Will Robinson, Danger !
Turns out this new ebay option is self selected by the seller but they may not realize that it is run by Pitney Bowes and it is very adverse to risk and can stop your shipment and or will not export/import it.
If you google this you will see that they are regularly stoping shipments due to concerns like mercury in tubes or arcane references to gear manufactured before 1970 ?
You may have a bit of a struggle getting your refund and if the seller said no returns your gear, the gear you bought, disappears and they refund your money and you have no recourse.
So, I just lost the tl audio comp that I bought at about 50% off fair market value , that I was pleased about and I have my money back but no comp.
I find this very suspicious, what exactly happens to all this gear that they don't transport ?
Bottom line , sellers on ebay do not have to pick this global service, so don't unless you want the deal to go south on your buyer.

not in the audio world but regarding their global shipping: I bought my wife a vintage wood sewing box for xmas last year. shipped from the UK using global shipping. Showed up broken in pieces. Turns out that ebay has locations set up to repackage these products in order to minimize size. They had completely ditched the sellers strong packaging in order to use a smaller box with newspaper protection (wtf) for less costs. There are many complaints about this online if you dig around.

People complain about the absurd fees but fail to support the alternatives. I think Reverb is still kinda clunky but I'm happy to use them when I can. As far as ebay global shipping goes, I've sent items through it many times and prefer it because you only need to get it to a domestic location. Then, it's not your problem anymore if it's held up in customs, mishandled, etc.

You can use ebay but in your preferences/settings you have to not select the Global Shipping Program. After the sale you and the buyer can just get quotes from what ever shipper you want.
