I did vinyl laminate over concrete and it worked just great. Better than concrete and looks way nicer. It's worth it to get the better laminate imo and most importantly to buy a box or two more than you need. Yes it does scratch if you scrape a heavy guitar amp across it and no it does not look like wood. Also many basements don't have the smoothest floor and quickly with traffic the vinyl will reveal those seemingly small bumps. The better laminate will reveal less as they are usually thicker. It is vital that you clean and scrub the floor before laying it down. Even pebbles will eventually tear through the laminate. Also its important to pick up extra laminate as many styles run out of popularity and will eventually disappear from the marketplace. Years ago I had picked up a popular model laminate and had to order online for replacements from a dwindeling supply for way more than i had paid. That all said: laminate can look really nice and in my case 'brightened' up the studio making it look way more professional. Beats a concrete floor in most cases minus maybe a large room or warehouse. For basement studios its great. Wood is always better. In every regard; acoustically and aesthetically.

I think I'll be going that way - the vinyl over the concrete floor. There are 3 or 4 brands that keep coming up: Shaw, Mannington, Armstrong & Coretec.

I went with the absolute cheapest option, doing nothing but oriental 6x9s, or is that asian 6x9s? I haven't kept up with the cultural sensitivity of the rug industry. Awesome looking room. Is that a stack of Randall MTS modules I see? Yah, some stock Randall-Egnater, some customized Salvation-Sacred Groove-Jaded Faith modules. The new Synergy versions are finally shipping from Friedman-Diezel-Morgan-Soldano, cool to see the format extended to it's 3rd or 4th generation..

Cool space subspace. I think it would look a lot more finished if you stained the concrete. Everything would look better around it, and your clients would feel uplifted by the environment. But then they might want to make uplifting music and that's not really my niche... Concrete stain has always been on my to do list and I might just get the opportunity with a roof/ceiling renovation coming up fast. Taking it down to the joists and considering leaving the interior sheetrock bare and just draping it end to end in red velvet. Somewhere between a far eastern and a strip club motif...

The bones of the space are great, so any of those options will work nicely. Staining the concrete seems to be an easy and smart choice. Then the rugs will look less out of place.
Can't help myself when it comes to interior design. I've been friendly with some of the world's best designers, and some of their knowledge rubbed off.

Yeah, I love the MTS line, total game changer for me. And I feel like they're still some studio "secret". I have a mashall and a vox module from jaded faith, looking to maybe get a snake bite or other Framus type high gain module but I'm tempted to save up and get a Kemper instead.
