if you were thinking about say $750 usd for a used 2 channel ( dual moo/stereo) comp to add some character and to compliment: a stam ssl, 2 WA76 and a WA 2a, what gets you goin ?
Anybody like the drawmer 1960, what about older tl stuff ?
I had a Cl 7802 with with upgraded transformers that was nice too ?
Thoughts ?

I think you can get a VLA II moded by JJ audio for that price. Comes with carnhill transformers. Can't personally vouch for it but it always looked interesting to me.
$750 for two channels kind of limits your options.

You might be able to get a used JDK comp. I heard they're dark and somewhat colored in a good way, but again, I never heard one myself.
Drawmer 1968's go used for about $1000 and seem to be well respected. You might find one for cheaper and if you don't like it you can easily sell it for what you paid.

check out the fmr audio pbc-6a, two of those are around $950 but well worth the price of admission for the gear

I always end up defaulting to the standards, 1176, LA2A, SSL, 33609 or 2254, etc. They create a known palette of sound so that you're always getting what you want, and what competes with modern recordings.

The Drawmer 1978 is a sweet stereo comp... I saw them on sale for about $750 recently. A killer deal for a colourful versatile comp.

I know a couple folks who like their 1960s, but have not had the pleasure. Most of the stereo comps I've used (don't own) are really pricey—SSL, Manley, Smart, API. Only the SSL has an affordable counterpart that I'm aware of (I like my Stam a lot). You could do a linked pair of Aphex Expressors under budget, although I can personally only speak to their use in mono.

Used SB4001 if you have a 500 series chassis. IMO nothing can touch it in that price range.

I've got a fistful of cheaper compressors that get regular use, dbx 160XTs and a Pro VLA II in rack form, but too bad about the lack of 500 series, the 560As and FC526 are sweet too!

Ditto on the Overstayer. Or maybe a used pair of GAP Comp-3a to replace the ones you sold.

the dbx162sl was a very nice stereo compressor. The purple faced one . I really enjoyed using that one while i had. What a beast thAt was. Not sure if they still make them. But they are only just over your budget mark and i found them useful for both tracking and mixing through. I sort of miss that one and am tempted to get another one at some stage.

I don't know if I could have the cojones to stay in that budget. I have the Drawmer 1968 and I'll vouch they're a good find. They have a personality that I think is pretty fun and musical when you push it around, but they're also pretty subtle when you dial it back. I left it strapped across the 2 bus for a while and handled it pretty well. The BIG switch (HPF) is extremely handy. I think I would also be considering kits just to get the best bang for the buck. I think the first on my list would be a JLM MAC Stereo Opto Compressor - but that's a little over a hundred bucks over-budget. I bet it's WORTH that $100 though. www.jlmaudio.com/shop/mac-rack-kit.htmlIf I'm shopping to a price point like that I think it's always good to be an opportunist and check eBay or demo model stuff and see what turns up

I am buying in cdn$ so plus 20-30% by the time it gets here from US.
I was checking gs, reverb and eBay.
Bought a tl Audio C1 with original tubes blue face for $535 and will buy a revive audio dbx166 for around $335 and I order some nos tubes from Bowie for my wa2a
So, I'll have a nice range: Wa2a 2 wa76 1 stam ssl 4K stereo 1 tl Audio C1 stereo/dual mono valve opto 1 dbx166
Thx for suggestions: all in under a grand

They had 160's but they were $460 each so a lot more. The 166 I got has been modded so significantly upgraded from stock: fingers crossed that it performs better as well !

I'd love to hear the modded 166, stock unit at my old old place did not cut it for me, but it has been a long time. I think it's just sitting unused at Hyde Street Studio C.
