I normally post my finished tunes, with film clips in the "What are you working on" section. I wanted to share this one here, because I think sonically its probably the best thing I have ever done. I have overcome a few sonic challenges I have been working against in the last month or so, you know when you have those little leap forwards somewhere in the process of writing and recording music... rare, but super rewarding. When I listen to this, I am quite proud of the sonics... (whether you like , hate or loathe the song or the performance is an aside). I also wanted to give a shout out to jeromemason for the little DBX 560A that he modded himself he sold me. I used this on the LHS acoustic guitar .. the guitar at the start of the mix. That little comp beat everything out in my racks for that particular part, and set the tonal stage for the tune.... amazing little box for the price. Also, a number of bits of gear from forum members are on this tune... how cool is that? 8) Zulu from illacov of Handsome Audio, SA4000 and SA2A from stam at Stam Audio. As well as DIY stuff from joemalone JLM Audio, jimwilliams Delta Console, bryce from Warm Audio, jsteiger from Capi all the non "Big Boys" Which is really cool when you think about it... mostly little guys feeding their families off this stuff..... awesome. Please take a listen on good speakers, though it translates well on iPhone, iPad, TV etc.... thats one of the things I am most happy about... the songs are translating... Anyways thanks for checking it out... cheers Wiz There Must Be More - Peter Knight

Wiz,
Havent had a chance to listen yet, Im sure its stellar and congrats to you sir. Anything you can pin point as what improved the quality? commiting more to eq/sat/comp during tracking? The arrangement? Not looking for a "this piece of gear" response but maybe it is a piece of gear..

I've listened now four times. It sounds luxurious, like being enveloped in a blue velvet lined blanket, all cozy and warm.

Pro Q 2 by Fab Filter. The ability to basically solo the band of EQ you are boosting or cutting... really helps me dial in to get rid of masking frequencies between instruments..in particular I was and have always been having issues in the 160-240Hz region.... I had demo'd PRO Q 2 before but had missed out on its ability to do the solo the band, prior to the demo finishing... I had to upgrade my Fab Filter stuff, and got another demo...and as soon as I used it this time, I bought it. It helped a lot cheers Wiz

Wiz, how much Zulu did you use? Hey donr I keep pretty extensive notes (type A personality 8) ) so I can tell you exactly what. Zulu, didn't get used during the tracking stage on this song. On mix down its on (numbers refer to clock face, going from top of unit to bottom) RHS Electric Strat Rythm (hat side) HX,HI,9,8,HI Strat Solo Guitar HX,HI,9,8,HI Chorus Harmonies HX,HI,9,8,HI Mixdown HX,HI,11,9,HI It gets tried on most things, except Overheads and Toms, not because of the Zulu, but because of how I work, reamping the six channels of drums at once, so I try Zulu on kick and snare and sometimes it gets used, sometimes my 111c Transformers get used and sometimes nothing. But I quickly patch the zulu in on everything else during my reamp phase and sometimes its just the ticket, as in this case with the solo Strat guitar it really just helped the part come alive and sit right in the mix. So the basic setting of the zulu got used on all the mix elements, and on the stereo mix down, in conjunction with the Stam SA4000 all that was different to the individual tracks was the BIAS was clicked up 2 notches and the ENHANCE went up a notch. The more I use it the more I zone in on what it's doing, and I think up until now I might have been a touch heavy handed with it, and used tastefully (as I suppose with everything) it's just getting better and better. Again, it shows me that I really need to use a piece of gear over a few projects to get whether its right for me long term. Also this track has a lot of the WARM 1176 on it , Bass, Low Harmony, middle acoustic guitar, Solo Guitar.... where as on other tunes it might not see as much duty.... thanks again for checking it out cheers Wiz

Dude...nothing wrong with that. Sounds fantastic. I'm starting to really get to know the Zulu too. It fits perfectly for what you're doing. (Only wish it had an option for makeup gain.)

Hey Johnkennthanks bud, I use the SA4000 on the two buss to make up gain, or the out board gear in front of the zulu during reamp... I think when I first started using it I was leaning too much on the ENHANCE to get gain, as its... louder with more ENHANCE 8) thanks again cheers Wiz

Fabfilter eq is my go to eq most of the time, however I never use the solo feature(facepalm..) so are you soloing with your daw 2 different inst.then sweeping a Q2 solo on one of the solo'd channels to listen for ugly nasty masking?

Cool sounds you're getting Wiz!
I dig your treatments. Each attempt has high levels of merit and tone that I dig.
What's the vocal chain/treatment on this record?
Thanks -L.

Dude...nothing wrong with that. Sounds fantastic. I'm starting to really get to know the Zulu too. It fits perfectly for what you're doing. (Only wish it had an option for makeup gain.) With Zulu it's always BYO-PRE. I feel like the minute I add makeup gain to a design like this, it will be immediately accompanied by a request for switchable transformers, bypass for the active makeup gain section, some kind of parallel mix circuit, a hardwire bypass and oh yeah a $1000 price tag. LOL Those VP28 are monsters John, I want to see how much gain you lose with those driving Zulu. I'm straight with my Mackie 8Mix and I barely use em past 10-15db in front of Zulu. If I'm making up gain I have to use them very gingerly, since I may need no more than 2 or 3db to get them to pre Zulu amplitude level. It's all about how you spank em! Thanks -L.

Sounds great, man! I've got the Zulu setup over here. Do you generally stay around those settings you posted above? Still trying to get a handle on this thing. I like to bypass things to see where I've been and where I'm at, but it's a bit of a pain to set up a bypass workaround.
