So I decided it was time for a new vocal mic, and tested (and bought) the Shure KSM8. It's amazing!
Here's the story: for the past few years I had been using the Shure Super 55 (Elvis styled) which has a Beta58 capsule. Never been a fan of the Beta 58, but the capsule really worked great for this mic. I learned its quirks and was sounding better with it than with a 58. However, I needed a little extra help to pull off certain difficult tunes live, with the "studio quality" that I've gotten used to. Enter the KSM8.
Everything Shure claims about this mic is true. It took me one rehearsal to "learn" it. It feels like cheating, compared to a 58! It doesn't have the high mid bump, which gives a very natural sound that takes EQ really well. A little bit of highs and you're done! The proximity effect is minimal. This allows me to sing 1-1.5 inches frI'm the mic, and if I need extra help, for instance, for a low vocal part, I can "eat the mic" and get the extra gain I need with just a touch more added lows. I can also lean back when needed with no tonality change.
I'll use it live "in the field" next week, we'll see what happens in the heat of the battle!

Cool, I didn't realize this mic existed. I'd like to try it.

Yeah I wasn't aware of it either. Will look into if I start playing out a lot again.

I've been looking at this one a lot, since I use an SM57 a lot for handheld vocals when I'm not heating up the tube mics.
Also I don't have an RE20 any longer, and this might be able to sort of cover that vocal role, if it's as good as people are saying. While being half the size.
