So, I dissapeared for a bit.. A while back ago someone broke into my house, took all my music stuff / cars. Kind of just gave up for a while, but music is a passion that won't quit so now I'm looking for something cheap(ish) to start going again.
I had my WA-2A upstairs so I have that, as for the rest I'm starting again.. After sorting out insurances / getting new cars etc. and taking a well deserved holiday can't say my budget is that great.. Probably $600 - $700.00
Not sure what's the flavour of the month at the moment, don't really need that much in the way of masses of I/O as it's only really me using it. Any suggestions welcome. I tend to mainly do rock / metal.

I tend to mainly do rock / metal. That sucks big time! Now here is my advice buy used ! Get an interface a couple of mics and monitors that will get you by, but buy stuff to get you started that you can flip for not much loss! Then build your studio by buying used, don't have specific pieces in mind, buy decent well regarded pieces at bargain used and flip what you don't like. Upgrade the basics the same way. If cash flow is a problem the payment plans at Zzounds and American Musical supply can be a godsend, but realize your going to give up bargains to get it now and pay as you go! Make freinds with the local MI shops, SR companies and Pawnshops, Here layaway can be your best friend! Learn what stuff sells for not asking price !

Thanks for the kind words, appreciate it.. Yeah I'll look into an Audient had one a while ago, I remember having a lot of issues with drivers when I had an MOTU 1248 (causing pops / crackles and excessive latency). So I was looking to replace it at some point anyway..
Suppose I'll take poppmans advice and get an SM7B, not my favourite mic but it's great as a versatile all rounder. Rest I'll look at second hand, might find some keepers..

If it were me I'd get a 3U MKID (U87 style) immediately. No bigger bang for the buck in a mic in my view.

A friend of mine offered me a Soundcraft Signature 12 MTK for $250.00.. He eventually got an X32, it's a 14 in 12 out USB mixer with DBX limiters and some Lexicon effects, never had anything soundcraft so not sure if it's worth it. Some of the recordings he did were quiet impressive though?? Not sure really. raganNot sure if you remember that thread on GS, was I missing something? To me it sounded quite err dull I suppose, I could honestly just not know how to use it properly so if it's an EQ thing or something let me know.

That GS thread is years old and thousands of posts long and I was in it from the start so there have been a lot of exchanges! But anyway, I've used SM7bs for years, as well as lots of 3U stuff, and while the SM7b can really work for some things, I wouldn't want it to be my only mic. I've AB'd directly with a Warbler MKID and it sounds like a harder/flatter (dimensionally, not Frequency's spectrum wise) version of the sound. Not surprising, it's a dynamic and they're just different animals. If you thought a U87 style mic was dull, I don't think you're gonna dig a large dynamic like that. But for all I know you've used SM7's a ton and know that that mic is what you want, in which case, disregard my .02 of course.

But for all I know you've used SM7's a ton and know that that mic is what you want, in which case, disregard my .02 of course. Nope, it's super cool I do appreciate the advice.. I really like the other Warbler on your voice (can't exactly remember which one it was), although it's a little pricey just for the moment.. Next year when I have everything back in order I'll upgrade stuff, that's if I get back into the swing of things as well.. I've done a lot of rock / metal tracks so I'm quite familiar with the SM7B although it's never been my favourite mic.. Only thing I'm concerned about is the room I'm in at the moment is heavily dampend but still suffers a little bit with reflections.. It's set up to avoid a lot of issues with monitors as opposed to being the best tracking room so reason I was thinking about the SM7B was due to it's ample amounts of offside rejection. Although there's two things, I have gotten decent results before in that room (with vocals) and it is heavily treated so I'm not 100% convinced it's the room.. The only real change is I swapped my interface for an MOTU 1248 (that I've had a lot of driver issues with).. So I'm not completley convinced it was the mic's fault. I might be able to grab one for testing, so I'll give it another go.. Or the other option is a handheld condensor. Edit: Has anyone tried an EV RE320 on vox? Sounded good to me from clips at least..

Gotcha. Well maybe SM7b is the ticket for you for the moment. FWIW, my fav dynamic mic for all around purposes is the 441. I've had a few and I love those damn things.

I'd love one, again a bit pricey over here .. I mean if budget wasn't a concern I'd probably just go with a Gefell. The MD421 is an option, can't remember how it stacks on vox because I tended to use them for mic'ing amps with 57's.. Then there's the SM7B, RE 320 and I heard a few good things about the M88 (if I can find one).. @snowflake, yep seems the Audient ID 14 is a popular one it has got somewhat mixed reviews.. Although you just never really know, I've had a few boxes everyone raved about that didn't work out too well in practice and vice versa.

I've bought a couple around the $450 mark. But that's still more than an SM7b (or a Warbler ).

I'd probably grab a Focusrite interface for about $200, an SM58/57, and some kind of condenser in the price range.
It's a funny question to go back to the beginning, but a good challenge also, good luck with it.

It's all good, I can be the go to guy for low end on this forum. Which essentially means I'll sit in a corner talking to myself ..

I'm all done.! Woooooow.! I'm only 16X over budget which for me is actually better than I thought AHAHA!..! Seriously, I have a problem. I got: Dynaudio LYD-48 (in short cracking monitors) Souncraft MTK-22 (great desk) Fender Precision bass Washburn "parrallaxe" or however you spell it. GZ67FET ISK 2B Beauty NI Komplete 11 Another Kemper (rack this time) Laney Ironheart (for live) Another 2Box Drummit Audio Technica RH-70X Boat load of plugs Luckily I did have some spare gear in lockup (most of my mic library from my old studio and some compressors / pre's etc.).. Although I'll be selling most of them off anyway. Might keep a single U87 AI and an SM7B, apart from that I'm not really sure what more I could want? Stick a fork in me I'm done.
