Finally got to this, John. (I've been a little busy though I could dodge in and out.)
I love your artist, JK. It's the reason I came here originally. You posted a tune on GS that I wanted to hear more of. Went looking for you after a time and some GS communication, and you'd been banned. WTF?
What I mainly love about JK's tunes is an honesty and reality about his writing, and his sincerity as a performer. I know it when I hear It's what I go for too, even as the expectation of my band has more latitude.
I know JK is writing and making demos primarily to sell his songs, but I for one really like John Kennedy as an artist. It's how I got here in the first place.

I so appreciate you being here! And getting that kind of compliment from you means more than you can imagine. We all just want to be accepted - but it's acceptance from those that I admire that has always really mattered to me. That's the ultimate validation. I've kind've been wondering whether to mention this, but I'm actually in the process of getting out of songwriting - or published songwriting. (That's good because no one will sign me lol) I could probably stick around and struggle - and maybe even hit another lick if I'm lucky...but with the industry - and especially songwriting/publishing - being in an absolute tailspin, I just can't justify all of it. Last year I made a fourth of what I made 5 years ago...it's unsustainable. No money, they take your money when you make it, no respect, very few real friends, and ultimately, I fucking HATE this genre the way it is now. It's been 18 successful years of my life - and it has been a decision I've been literally grieving - but it's time for a different chapter. I'll never stop writing...in fact, I've felt a MAJOR burden lifted off of me - the freedom to do and write exactly what I want and not give a flying shit whether anyone will like it or not - which probably means people will be interested again lol. Anyway, didn't mean to throw a pity party. I realize how lucky I have been...but man, I am ready to start making some money so I can buy some of this damn gear. This resignation letter from William Faulkner to the Oxford, MS Post Office in 1924 somewhat summarizes how I feel: "As long as I live under the capitalistic system, I expect to have my life influenced by the demands of moneyed people. But I will be damned if I propose to be at the beck and call of every itinerant scoundrel who has two cents to invest in a postage stamp. This, sir, is my resignation." With all that being said...I'm definitely going to start putting out my own music...without the need for it to make my living.

Yeah, I don't know where popular music is headed now. I can't imagine young people are getting as much out of it compared to my day. It was really important to me when I was young, and there wasn't a whole lot else competing for my attention.
I feel blessed to still be making a living at it after fifty years, and it still gratifies me as much as ever to do it.

I still think it's somewhat sustainable for future artists...even if you're not making much on the creative side, you can always perform and make money. I just think as of right now, being soley a songwriter is akin to being a blacksmith in 1906 with the advent of the automobile. There are still blacksmiths around...just not a huge demand for them. And hey - if you can make it as a songwriter now, absolutely go for it. I bet things get adjusted in the next ten or so years, I just don't have that long to wait.

Well, the internet has disrupted the hell out of the music business, as much as any I guess. Even I don't want to own music if I don't have to. I do appreciate live performance much more than I used to. I'm seeing much more artists live and not listening to records so much.
