I am! Its gospel at this point. Been using Coles 4038s almost daily for 20+ years - i never thought ANYTHING could replace it - until the Stagers came along. Put them next to a Coles - they're bigger, Put 'em next to an AEA (any model)- the AEA will sound scooped and thin. We pretty much established this in the first 10 seconds of our little event in Nashville the other day using one great tube preamp and a single SR-1A over a drum kit - the result was jaw dropping. Sounds ace, but for those of us in the EU, the price of the SR-1A is already substantially more than a 4038, plus shipping, plus import tax. Is it really that much better?

Yes big differences between the sr1a and the sr2n . So can we be a little clearer in which stager mics we are talking about. As i get confused . Eg Coil audio loved the stager in the first 10 seconds. Which one and for what purpose/ source. svart you said you liked the stager. Which one and on what source and what are you comparing it to from your experience? I have the sr2n and have been hankering for the big brother model. But i also think if i am going to pay that mich then maybe i should just go all the way and get a rca 44. But are these both in the same territory of sound? Thats is the sr1a and he rca 44.

The Xaudia-modified Reslo is amazing. It has top end like a "normal" mic, damn straight usable for vocal and acoustic guitar with no EQ, where my Royer R101 absolutely requires EQ for that task.

Do you feel similarly about the Stager SR-2N? Absolutely - there is DEFINITELY no comparison at its price point. Its like a sub kick for guitar amps. The best chain ive ever heard for guitar amp is either an SR-1A or SR-2N through our CA-70 circuit. As for the SR-1A versus an RCA 44 - i dont miss the 44 when using the SR-1A at all. It might be a bit bigger sounding even -

So would you recommend the SR-2N for drums as strongly too?

I am curious about the Stagers. I'm wondering if anyone's compared these (or the Coles) to the Rode NTR. I have a pair of these and it has been really fun getting to know them.

The SR-2N demos sound quite good, and they look cool and easy to position.
Coles are awesome but sometimes I think they're overused as overheads now. I prefer them for rooms. Many productions just don't call for that sort of ultra-fat yet punchy sound, which is easy to fall back on with the Coles.
Damn the Torpedoes used KM86s and Albini didn't always use Coles. On Surfer Rosa he mainly used 414s rooms in M/S and added 460 OHs for Goat.
Just to give two famous examples of non-Coles records where the drums sound great.
Last tracks I got, there where Blumlein fatheads which sounded extremely good and captured cymbals well. M160s overhead.

I thought Albini I was a AT pro37 guy? I think he uses those for amps sometimes. The Surfer Rosa info is from Electrical audio forum (where he also said he didn't use overheads much at all initially) and there's a tracking/mic list of Goat floating around. I think he most typically uses Coles, Royers, and M160s for overheads now, with a C24 out front and rooms.
