I'm thinking about adding a third mic/line input into my Apollo Twin, so it looks like optical/ADAT in for me. Looks like I'll need a small ADC to go from the pre to the Twin's optical in so I'm wondering what all y'all would consider to be the most cost-effective solution here.

why wouldn't you just use the optical in; it can take up to 8 new inputs, like an audient ?
From UA site: Up to 8 channels of additional digital input via Optical TOSLINK connection

I just need to find an interface or some type of simple box that will take the balanced output from a pre and convert it to optical out. I know there are a few interfaces out there that have ADAT out but I don't need another 8 channels, just one more, at the moment and was hoping there was something that would work. I used to have an Aphex 230 channel strip that had optical out but I sold that a while ago.

Okay, I just noticed that I have a Focusrite Scarlett 6i6 which has coax S/PIDF output so I'm thinking I can pull this off with some type of Coax S/PIDF to Optical out converter. Any suggestions as to which box would do the trick would be welcome.

Im feeding my Apollo Twin with a UA 2192. They seem to be around $1,500 for two channels, but it works great and it is an awesome two channel converter that sounds fantastic (of course, it has DA too). In front of that, I have a Silver Bullet.
I'm very happy with this simple set up - I end up with four channels for tracking and can go API flavor with the Bullet A setting and the Unison API vision strip, or go Neve style with the N setting and the Unison 1073.
It's a very simple and lean set up with four inputs plus the ability to round trip the two bus back through the Bullet/2192 during mix time.

I just bought the ART Digital MPA II for a similar purpose. It was on sale on a local dealer, the specs are good, it's got lots of useful functionality and people say it sounds good too!

I would avoid the Behringer. Just my opinion, of course.
I would look very closely at the Presonus DP88. 8 Channels of pres and/or direct ADC inputs for use with your own preamps. Burr Brown conversion, sounds amazing. Can be had under $500 refurbished or second hand. I wish I had more.
Or if you want to stick to stereo, try adding a Tascam UH-7000 in SPDIF.
The converter box I use is called the Hosa ODL-312. I use it when connecting the Twin (or an iD22) with the Tascam UH-7000.

I have owned a few ADA8000's and now own a ADA8200.
it mainly drives my VU meters and headphone outs, but I do have 4 channels coming up on the mixer, yesterday I had resonator and shaker and tambourine getting ramped through it.
Sure, it sounds different to my MOTU 16A, but I don't worry about it... for ancillary parts.
They have all been great value for money, though I had to replace the power supply caps in one of my old ADA8000s....
cheers
