So I was returning a few guitar cases at GC and they happened to have a really good headphone display. After listening to what they had I kinda fell in love with the BeyerDynamic 990 pro. They sounded so detailed and the separation/stereo spread was amazing. I almost bought them on the spot. So much better than my Sony 7506, or AKG cans. I rarely use headphones except sometimes for tracking but I'm mixing/recording out of a bed room in my house for the time being and thought these would be very useful and would complement my Adam A7's very well.
Before I buy these can you guys recommend any other headphones for mixing, in the $200 - $250 range I should be looking at? I should mention that I was listening to the 250 ohm version but they also make 32 and 600 ohm ones too. Not sure as to the difference but it seems the 600's are the "best". Thanks.

I really like the Sennheiser HD650's and AKG Q701's. Both pairs get a ton of use at my place.

I use for checking the mix the AKG K701. I would not mix with cans its a total diffrent base response and left and right is like in seperate rooms. And if you use them by mistake too loud and to long you can damage your hearing.
Decent room good monitors is a must for me.

When I mix with headphones, I use Sennheiser HD600's (upgraded with an HD650 cable), along with the Waves Nx and Sonarwork Reference 3 Headphone plug-ins.

I went with the AKG K702 and I could not be more happy with the choice.
I would love to audition the Sennheiser, Shure, and Audio Technica open backs at this price point but have no good reason to, unfortunately.
The best headphone amp I have ever heard is the Tascam UH-7000. That's another piece of the puzzle for me.

K701 for me too. I find that they only have a couple blindspots. Most of the time when I check a mix after only using the K701, it's only a few peaks that are too loud. That will happen less as I transition to other methods than the Waves limiters for peak control.
As for amps, just get the O2 from jds labs. There's another place in the UK you can get it too. I suggest that because the guy who designed it explained in great detail and with mountains of evidence why it provides transparent sound and adequate volume for many headphones. He also didn't make a dime off it 9r his odac. Unfortunately, I don't have the tech or knowledge to do measurements of other stuff and audio interface companies seem to know little about headphone amp design.
My audient id14 is adequate enough for me to mix on. One of these days I will havta get an actual Odac and see if pro tools will acknowledge it bc my hifime supposed odac clone only comes up as an option in Reaper.

What's the difference between the stock HD600 cable and the 650 cable? It's been over 10 years since I researched this, or compared them, so I don't remember exactly what the difference is. However, I do recall that I noticed an improvement, and that it was an upgrade that Bob Olhsson had recommended on the purple site.

Is there more than one version of the k701? I ask because I see them selling for anywhere between $180-400. Seems like a pretty big difference in pricing for one product. Am I missing something?

I have 2 pair of Q701. One pair is Made in Austria, one is Made in China. I think these are based on the age though. They were made in Austria before moving production to China. I've found that Amazon generally has the best pricing on headphones. Way, way, way better than the MI retailers.

I like the Chinese better. The band on the Chinese is softer and they grip my head a little better. Still not totally sure if they sound different. I compared a little, but they were close enough for me.

I like my HD650s as a reference. That said if you are trying to mix solely on headphones you will need a way to guestimate/accomodate for their inherently problematic center channel balance and bottom octave. I basically had to do this for a few years when we were living abroad and it kind of sucked.

I'm in a less than ideal space at the moment and I'm hoping these will reveal some details I'm having trouble articulating in my current room. Especially reverb trails/delays etc

Am I the only one that finds monitors more revealing for reverb and effects?

Am I the only one that finds monitors more revealing for reverb and effects? Headphones are always a second choice for me, so I am a bit biased on that type of question.

Am I the only one that finds monitors more revealing for reverb and effects? I find that I can hear the effect mix level earlier on headphones but can appreciate the depth better with monitors, which is really the important part, and the former simple wet vs dry is misleading. I always dial in things too dry on headphones and tend to use bigger rooms, and longer echos/taps when I use monitors.

Am I the only one that finds monitors more revealing for reverb and effects? I'm in a small room that's fully carpeted with a lot of bass traps, I'm finding my room to be too dead sounding. The bass response is better than I thought it'd be but I'm definitely having issues hearing some high end detail. It's most evident to me with reverb and delay trails. That being said this is kind of an impulse purchase, I have $200 burning a hole in my pocket and I really liked those DT 990's.
