My iPod. I hear so much cool stuff on there that I can't help but want to make music.
To be less cute about it...
Probably my Chameleon Labs 7602 X-Mods. Oftentimes most vocals, bass guitar, guitar, overheads, and then eventually my mixes run through them.
Or my Zen Pro Mod Yamaha HS8s.

No doubt, the monitoring chain. Every single decision I make is based on how those translate the signal to my ears. Everything else is negotiable.
Now, if we're looking for a chunk of hardware --- The Neve MBP (Portico II Master Buss Processor). Damn near everything goes through that box, even if all the processing is bypassed and it's just hitting the transformers. Everyday projects go through, my occasional voiceovers go through, once in awhile clients will send in tracks (usually vocal or bass, occasional drum submix) just to run through for a touch of impact before they print their final mixes (or if they play to varying backing tracks).
I don't think I've ever had a piece in the rack that was so versatile. Frankly - and this is saying something - I rarely change the settings. It actually has a "starting point" other than "zeroed out" -- Don't get me wrong - I'll adjust it if need be, bypass certain processes or what not. But much of the time, when I know it's going to be used (which again, is almost always), it's a "global" process that's there early - and then I just work into it.

88.2khz.
Not really a "single piece of gear" exactly....but, other than that it will be instruments....but, my runner up is probably the 121....but, BOTH double sample rate and the 121 didn't so much improve the end result a TON....they completely altered the amount of effort it took to get there. I used to spend an afternoon moving mutliple dynamics and LDCs around the speaker and/or room trying to get a sound that works....now, I just put the mic 18" out directly on the cone (so 100% repeatable session to session)....

In my particular case: Sennheiser 416.
It's not the prettiest sounding mic on its own, however it's very detailed, cuts through mixes with ease, takes EQ like a champ and has a certain sonic signature for VO that commercial producers know and recognize. I tried using other mics that I thought sounded more melifluous but after switching to the 416 full-time, my bookings increased enough to know right away that it was going to be my main axe for good.
Still looking for a secondary mic for certain types of reads. One that does the mid-forward, detailed thing as well as the 416 but is warmer. Probably will go with an 87 variant of some sort. Thinking about DIY-ing one so I can better dial in the right level of transformer-thickness for what I need.

For me it's been the pull back to a "console" style sound. I'm not really too interested in a "tape" sound, but I AM interested in how I could gain stage and drive discrete consoles of my youth. That brought about experimentation, which ultimately led to designing the Silver Bullet with Brad @ LTL. That single piece of gear - the Silver Bullet - has done more to improve my sound than all my mics, outboard, console, etc. combined. It was honestly a game changer for me. If I had to choose between a console and 3-4 Silver Bullets, I'd take the Silver Bullets. And in reality, that's exactly what I did do.
#2 would put me with nofilterchuck. AC. Indispensable to working and being creative!!
#3 would be the pull AWAY from plugins as much as possible. That has improved my sound dramatically (IMO).

Greg Hanks BA 660 tube preamp and tube compressor pair... very rich 3D sound with depth and sparkle but low distortion... great for my acoustic guitar and vocal driven music.

My MCI JH-110A 1" 8-track. Sounds like music to me. After that, Anamod ATS-1....for those times when the MCI has blown up or decided to throw a tantrum.

Mic collection hands down for me. The mic has the hardest job: converting acoustical energy into electrical energy and I've found that my recordings have gotten so much better with upgrading my mic locker.

I'm pretty sure there's a version available with attached ears. However the .38 is an option.

my Air conditioner it's a pain in the ass trying to hear over it, but if it's not on, it's an oven in my living room when the gear is on lol Lol, I hear ya. My room is nice, warm and cozy with all them tubes. Especially when I'm also running my Marshalls. AC is not common here in Europe, so, while we're sitting warm and cozy, at least we don't have to deal with the noise... As for gear, I don't know, I guess the pen I write my stuff with.
