I really would have preferred hearing this compressor shootout with a vocal performance with a wide dynamic range. The way a compressor stretches with the range change is a big part of the what should be under consideration imo.

Agreed! Mumbly tones is not my idea of a lead vocal.

I own a Retro STA Level having tried most of the others (not all)
The Retro STA Level is by far my favourite ever compressor for tracking my vocals after 35+ years of recording.
It just has the low end girth and smoothness of the top end that totally suits my bright high tenor voice.
There's no "best compressor" just the most appropriate for a given source.
I must say a couple of things though, firstly when I had a demo of a UA LA2A re-issue I was very disappointed with it, it had no more vibe and particular colour than the compressor in my Millennia STT-1 which was a huge surprise to me.
Also having used a CL1A (the point to point original hand wired version of the CL1B) and a CL1B I was amazed by how much I preferred the original CL1A .... I thought it had more vibe and warmth than the modern version.
Does the Warm Audio WA2A have more vibe and colour than the UA LA2A re-issue?
