A Gefell UMT70S and their m930 combo is mid/side heaven and makes me a happy camper. I do need to tell folks to get up close and personel with it, to me it is not a big old bottem end affair and I use proximity to tune in what is needed for the song to mitagate the use of eq for the most part. It is a fantastic mic to me on lots most everything. The low end of the m930 begins like three feet away and is a different animal all together. They bond well together. One thing I have noticed with all Gefell's, they blend well together

Well, I probably wouldnt buy an old UM70 from ebay. M7's dry out over time. People ask WAY too much for them. $600 is what I'd pay. Not $1000. I like factory fresh ones. I have a UMT70s and love it. And before anyone says its worse then a UM70, I pre-disagree Yeah at this point as much as I love the old version of the M7 I would probably buy a used modern UM70 for consistency, I think in terms of $700ea. What can I say I’m cheap and got spoiled paying cost ? I got the mid-90's versions of the 692/xxx capsules and the one piece S models. No PVC issues that I can discern. I like the build better than the older ones as well.

Just saying, Ebay junk is often mis leading. People pay premium prices for these mics online and find out the capsule needs to be replaced.

Part of the problem here is that while they don’t age well, when new those pre refomulated Gefells had a magic only found in great condition M7 U47’s 48’s and M49’s. They don’t age well and the newer ones are damn close, but man taking an early 90’s UM70 out of the box and putting it up against any other mic close in price was cheating! I know a guy who thought he was so smart when he bought a old Gefell M7 head to canablize the capsule for a 47 build only to have to send it to Thiersh for a reskin didn’t sound bad in the end but he could have saved a bunch just buying a Thiersch.

I did track a quick tune with it this weekend, plugged into a super-cheap Tascam interface using the built in preamp. Sounds good, can't wait to hear it with a better signal chain. (https://soundcloud.com/ericagner13/breeze, written and recorded in an hour and a half, one take, the Tascam interface didn't do so well with the EV 408 on the guitar amp).
I'm going to give it a try on drums. I could see selling some stuff off to get a pair of MT71's if it blows me away. Right now I'm using a mismatched pair for drum OH, Sony C38b and Warm WA-14.
The UM-70S I have is one of the later generation one-piece mics. The days of $600-700 UM70's are gone, I think. I paid almost twice that!

Got my UMT70S new from Full Compass in 1997, still going strong. They were $999 back then.
